The Missing Footage

Chapter 11 - The Missing Footage
The judge ordered the courtroom cleared while the memory card was examined.
For three hours, Claire waited in a private room with Daniel and Rosa.
No one spoke about the marriage.
No one spoke about forgiveness.
They spoke only about the recording.
Rosa explained that she had found the card months earlier when Evelyn ordered her to clean the camera housing.
“I knew she wanted it destroyed,” Rosa said. “So I replaced it with an empty one.”
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Daniel asked.
“I was afraid.”
Evelyn had paid for Rosa’s mother’s medical care years earlier. She frequently reminded Rosa that gratitude was a debt with no expiration date.
When Rosa began questioning Claire’s medication, Evelyn threatened to ruin her reputation and accuse her of theft.
“I told myself I was protecting my family,” Rosa said. “But every day I watched Claire grow weaker.”
Claire took her hand.
“You came back.”
“Almost too late.”
The technician finally entered.
The card contained hundreds of short recordings. Most showed empty corridors, staff members carrying laundry, and family guests entering board dinners.
One clip had been recorded two nights before Claire’s accident.
The courtroom reconvened.
On the large screen, Claire appeared at the top of the east staircase holding two contracts.
Evelyn approached from below.
“You lied to Daniel,” Claire said on the recording.
“I protected him.”
“There’s an eight-million-dollar payment to a company you control.”
“You do not understand the obligations of this family.”
“I understand theft.”
Evelyn’s face became cold.
“If you stop the sale, the company collapses.”
“Then show Daniel the real books.”
“He cannot handle the truth.”
“You mean you cannot control him if he knows it.”
Claire turned toward the stairs.
Evelyn caught her arm.
“Think carefully. You own twenty-four percent because your father trusted the Harrington name.”
“My father trusted Daniel. Not you.”
The recording ended when they moved out of frame.
Another clip began the morning after Claire’s crash.
Evelyn and Dr. Vale stood beneath the camera.
“She remembers the argument,” Evelyn said.
“She has a head injury,” Dr. Vale replied. “Memory may be unreliable.”
“I need certainty.”
“I can keep her calm.”
“Keep her from talking until after the sale.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The courtroom became silent.
Then a third recording appeared.
It had been filmed weeks later.
Evelyn stood alone on the staircase speaking into her phone.
“The police report must list Robert as the driver. Daniel can never know I was behind the wheel.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
Robert Harrington had been his father.
He had died believing the family whispered about him because of his declining health.
Now Daniel understood why.
Evelyn had used a dying man’s confusion to hide what she had done.
But when the judge asked whether the card contained footage of the actual crash, the technician shook his head.
“No.”
Evelyn looked almost relieved.
Claire noticed.
The recording proved the drugging and financial scheme.

It did not prove who caused the crash.
And Evelyn still believed the most dangerous evidence had never been found.
