The Woman Behind the Wheel

Chapter 13 - The Woman Behind the Wheel
The archived video arrived at midnight.
Claire, Daniel, Rosa, and Arthur watched it together.
Rain blurred the highway. The delivery truck followed several hundred feet behind Claire’s silver car.
A black sedan accelerated into view.
It pulled alongside Claire.
The vehicles disappeared briefly behind a curve.
Then the black sedan struck Claire’s door.
Claire’s car spun toward the shoulder and crashed through a barrier.
The sedan stopped.
Evelyn stepped out from the driver’s side.
She ran toward the wreck, then froze halfway.
For seventeen seconds, she stood in the rain with both hands over her mouth.
Then she returned to her car.
She did not call an ambulance.
She called Dr. Vale.
The truck driver stopped and contacted emergency services.
Daniel turned away from the screen.
Claire felt no triumph.
The woman in the footage was not the composed matriarch from the courtroom. She was frightened, desperate, and human.
But fear did not erase choice.
Evelyn had chosen herself at every turn.
She chose to flee.
She chose to blame Robert.
She chose to drug Claire.
She chose to forge signatures.
And every later crime had been committed to protect the first.
The police reopened the accident investigation before dawn.
Dr. Vale’s clinic records were seized.
Northstar announced that the sale would proceed unless the board formally withdrew approval.
At nine, Evelyn entered the Harrington-Bennett headquarters through a private entrance.
She had not yet been arrested because her attorneys were negotiating voluntary surrender.
She intended to complete the vote first.
Claire arrived in her wheelchair with Daniel beside her.
Reporters filled the lobby.
Evelyn watched them approach.
“You should be resting,” she told Claire.
“I rested for six months.”
“This company cannot survive a scandal.”
“It survived your husband’s death. It will survive the truth.”
Evelyn’s mouth trembled.
“I built everything Daniel has.”
“You also taught him to confuse obedience with love.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“The vote is canceled.”
“You do not have the authority.”
“I’m the chief executive.”
“And I control more board members than you.”
Claire placed a folder on the reception desk.
“My twenty-four percent votes no.”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“You signed your proxy to me.”
“The signature was forged.”
“That has not been legally determined.”
Claire opened the folder.
Inside was a certified temporary injunction barring Evelyn from using disputed proxies.
For the first time, fear entered Evelyn’s eyes without disguise.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“Ask your wife why she never told you she was pregnant the night of the crash.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Daniel turned toward her.
“What?”
May you like
Evelyn had saved one final secret.
And unlike the others, this one belonged to Claire.
