The Story Everyone Wanted to Believe

Chapter 02 - The Story Everyone Wanted to Believe

The police arrived in less than four minutes.

By then, Ethan was surrounded.

The woman introduced herself as Madison Cole. The man beside her was her husband, Blake Cole, general manager of Cole Automotive Group—the company that owned the detailing center where Ethan worked.

That single fact changed the temperature of the parking lot.

Blake was not just another angry father.

He was the boss's son-in-law.

Ethan was a twenty-two-year-old hourly employee with no family name anyone recognized.

Officer Daniels asked Ethan to explain what happened.

"I heard the baby crying," Ethan said. "He was alone. The car was hot. The door was unlocked, so I got him out."

Blake laughed without humor.

"Convenient."

Madison held Noah close, still shaken.

"I came outside and he was carrying my child."

"You saw the end," Ethan said quietly. "Not the beginning."

Blake stepped forward.

"Don't speak to my wife."

Officer Daniels moved between them.

Ethan looked at Madison.

"How long was he in there?"

Madison's eyes flickered.

"I don't know."

Blake answered for her.

"Two minutes. Maybe three."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

Blake's jaw tightened.

"You calling my wife a liar?"

"No. I'm saying the baby didn't look like he'd been crying for two minutes."

The crowd murmured.

Madison looked down at Noah.

For the first time, doubt crossed her face.

Blake saw it.

He put a hand on her shoulder.

"She's in shock," he told the officer. "I want him removed from the property."

Ethan's supervisor, Mr. Kellerman, appeared at the edge of the crowd.

He wouldn't meet Ethan's eyes.

"Ethan," he said, "you're suspended until we sort this out."

"Suspended?"

Blake turned.

"Fired."

Mr. Kellerman swallowed.

Nobody argued.

Officer Daniels did not arrest Ethan, but he asked him to come to the station for a statement.

As Ethan walked toward the patrol car, phones followed him.

A woman near the entrance whispered, "That's him."

By the time Ethan reached the police station, a twelve-second video was already online.

It showed him holding Noah.

It showed Madison running toward him.

It did not show the crying baby trapped inside the SUV.

The caption read:

YOUNG MAN CAUGHT TAKING BABY FROM CAR.

By midnight, it had been shared thirty thousand times.

And Blake Cole was about to make sure the world heard his version first.
