The Boardroom

Chapter 12 - The Boardroom

The board meeting began at nine.

Blake arrived at eight forty-five.

Perfect suit.

Perfect tie.

Perfect expression of concern.

He told the board Walter's health was declining.

He said Madison was emotionally unstable.

He said the family scandal threatened lenders, employees, and investors.

Then he offered himself as interim chief executive.

"For stability," he said.

Madison almost laughed.

Blake had caused the fire.

Now he wanted credit for holding the extinguisher.

Walter spoke first.

His voice was weaker than it had once been, but the room still listened.

"I made Blake Cole powerful because I mistook confidence for character."

Blake leaned back.

"This is exactly the kind of emotional accusation—"

Walter raised one hand.

"I'm not finished."

Then Madison stood.

She did not bring a dramatic stack of secret documents.

She did not have a miracle recording.

She had something harder.

The truth, with all its ugly parts.

She told the board she had nearly signed over her voting authority.

She admitted she had trusted Blake.

She admitted she had struggled after childbirth.

She admitted she had screamed at Ethan before understanding what happened.

Then she said, "If you believe those mistakes make me unfit to lead, remove me."

Blake smiled faintly.

Madison continued.

"But if we're discussing leadership, then ask yourselves why the man seeking control lied about leaving a seven-month-old baby alone in a hot SUV."

The smile vanished.

The board members looked at Blake.

He stood.

"That's not what happened."

Then the door opened.

Rosa entered with her attorney.

Behind her came Mr. Kellerman.

Then two mechanics.

Then the payroll manager.

One by one, employees Blake had intimidated walked into the room.

Blake's face changed.

Not because they carried perfect evidence.

Because they were no longer afraid of him.

The payroll manager spoke first.

"I won't sign another false statement."

A mechanic followed.

"Neither will I."

Blake looked around the room.

The power he had built depended on everyone believing they stood alone.

Now they were standing together.

The board voted to suspend him pending an independent investigation.

Blake walked out without a word.

Madison thought it was over.

It wasn't.

That night, Noah's crib was empty.

And Blake was gone.
