He Saved Her Crying Baby From a Hot SUV—Then She Accused Him of Kidnapping

Chapter 01 - He Saved Her Crying Baby From a Hot SUV—Then She Accused Him of Kidnapping

## chapter 01 - The Baby Behind the Glass

Ethan Reed was halfway across the parking lot when he heard the crying.

At first, he thought the sound was coming from somewhere inside the modern office building behind him. Then he saw the gray SUV sitting beneath the hard afternoon sun, streaked with soap from the detailing bay. Through the rear window, a tiny face twisted red with fear.

A baby was strapped into a car seat.

Ethan's stomach dropped.

He ran to the SUV, his gray hoodie flapping behind him. The windows were closed. The baby kicked and screamed, his little hands opening and closing helplessly. Ethan pulled at the rear handle.

Unlocked.

He yanked the door open and leaned inside.

"Hey, hey. I've got you."

His hands shook as he released the harness. For one terrible second, he was nine years old again, standing beside another car, hearing another child cry while adults argued somewhere too far away.

He pushed the memory down.

The baby was warm, damp with sweat, and trembling.

Ethan lifted him against his chest.

The crying softened almost immediately.

"You're okay," Ethan whispered. "You're okay now."

Then a woman's voice cut across the parking lot.

"What are you doing with my baby?"

Ethan turned.

A young brunette woman in a white top and jeans stood twenty feet away, frozen in disbelief.

Her face went pale.

Then she ran toward him.

"Put him down!"

Ethan tightened one arm around the baby so he wouldn't slip.

"Ma'am, he was alone in the car."

"Give him to me!"

People near the building entrance turned to look. Someone raised a phone.

The woman reached Ethan and tore the baby from his arms. The little boy immediately began crying again.

"My son," she gasped, kissing his head. "Oh my God. Noah."

Ethan stepped back.

"I was trying to help."

But the woman's fear had already turned into something sharper.

"Why were you inside my car?"

Before Ethan could answer, a tall man in a navy suit came running from the building.

He looked at Ethan.

Then at the open SUV.

Then at the crowd gathering around them.

And instead of asking whether the baby was all right, the man pointed directly at Ethan.

"Call the police," he said. "That kid was trying to take my son."

Ethan stared at him.

The baby had stopped crying.

May you like

But Ethan suddenly understood that nobody was listening anymore.

And the first police siren was already getting closer.
