The Trial Without a Hero

Chapter 16 - The Trial Without a Hero

Blake's case took months.

Madison hated every hearing.

Lawyers turned memories into arguments.

Headlines turned pain into entertainment.

But something had changed.

She no longer needed everyone to believe she was perfect.

Only honest.

Blake eventually pleaded guilty to child endangerment and financial crimes in exchange for a reduced sentence on several other charges.

He lost his position at Cole Automotive.

The court restricted his contact with Noah permanently.

Employees who had been pressured into silence received legal settlements.

Rosa returned to work only after the company adopted new protections for whistleblowers.

Walter stepped down.

Not because Blake forced him.

Because he chose to.

"I spent too long building a company and not enough time asking what kind of people were holding it up," he told Madison.

Madison did not become CEO.

At least not immediately.

She appointed an outside executive and joined the board while raising Noah.

For the first time in her adult life, she chose a slower path.

Blake called it weakness.

She called it breathing.

Ethan began paramedic training.

He was good at the work.

Too good sometimes.

The first time his class practiced rescuing a child from a vehicle, his hands froze.

His instructor noticed.

"You need a minute?"

Ethan almost lied.

Then he said, "Yes."

He stepped outside.

He breathed.

He went back in.

That was healing, he learned.

Not becoming fearless.

Returning after fear.

One afternoon, Madison brought Noah to visit June.

The baby was nearly one now.

He reached for everything.

Keys.

Buttons.

Ethan's stethoscope.

Madison laughed.

"He likes expensive equipment."

Ethan handed him a plastic toy instead.

"Budget cuts."

For a moment, they felt almost like ordinary people.

Then Madison said, "There's something I haven't told you."

Ethan looked at her.

She glanced toward June.

Then back at him.

"The day you saved Noah wasn't the first time Blake had seen you."

Ethan frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

May you like

Madison reached into her bag.

And pulled out an employment application with Ethan's name on it.
