The Interview

Chapter 15 - The Interview

Madison agreed to one national interview.

No makeup team.

No mansion.

No company office.

She sat in a plain studio chair with Noah's empty stroller beside her.

The interviewer asked about Blake.

Madison answered.

She was asked about the photos.

She answered.

She was asked whether she had suffered postpartum anxiety.

"Yes."

"Do you believe that made you a bad mother?"

"No."

"Did you believe Ethan Reed was trying to abduct your son?"

Madison paused.

"Yes. For about five minutes."

"Why?"

"Because I was afraid."

She looked directly at the interviewer.

"Fear is not the same as truth."

Then she told the country what Ethan had done.

No exaggeration.

No polished hero speech.

He heard a baby.

He opened a door.

He took the baby out.

That was all.

That was enough.

The interviewer asked whether Ethan had accepted money from the family.

"No."

"A job?"

"No."

"What did he ask for?"

Madison's eyes filled.

"His life back."

The interview aired that night.

The next morning, something strange happened.

People began deleting posts.

A local radio host apologized.

The delivery company that had canceled Ethan's interview called again.

He declined.

Then the director of his paramedic program called.

"We made a decision based on public pressure," she said. "That was wrong."

Ethan was readmitted.

His tuition balance, however, still remained.

Three days later, the college announced a new community-funded emergency-services scholarship.

Donations had come from hundreds of people.

Ten dollars.

Twenty-five.

Fifty.

No single wealthy savior.

Just strangers trying to repair what strangers had helped break.

Ethan accepted.

But the good news came with one last wound.

June found him sitting alone that evening, holding an old photograph of Sophie.

"You did it," she said.

He shook his head.

"No."

June sat beside him.

"I saved Noah."

"Yes."

"I couldn't save her."

June took his hand.

"Ethan, you were nine."

He finally cried.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

May you like

Just thirteen years late.

And for the first time, he let someone stay beside him while he did.
