The Deal

Chapter 14 - The Deal
Blake demanded to speak to Madison alone.
The police refused.
So he shouted from the porch.
"Tell them to drop the fraud investigation."
Madison stood behind an officer.
"No."
"Tell Ethan to withdraw his complaint."
"Ethan didn't file one."
Blake laughed bitterly.
"Of course he didn't. He gets to play the hero."
Ethan said nothing.
Blake's eyes moved between them.
"You think he cares about you?"
Madison's voice was calm.
"This has nothing to do with Ethan."
"It has everything to do with him. If he'd minded his own business, none of this would've happened."
Ethan finally spoke.
"Noah would've happened."
Blake went still.
Ethan stepped forward only as far as police allowed.
"He would've kept crying in that car. That's what would've happened."
Blake looked down at Noah.
For the first time, shame flickered across his face.
It vanished quickly.
But Madison saw it.
So did Ethan.
That was the difference between them.
Ethan had lived for thirteen years with guilt over a tragedy he had not caused.
Blake could barely tolerate thirteen seconds of guilt over something he had.
Police negotiators continued talking.
Eventually, Blake placed Noah's car seat on the porch.
An officer rushed forward.
Madison collapsed around her son.
Noah blinked up at her, sleepy and confused.
Safe.
Blake was arrested without a dramatic struggle.
As officers led him away, he turned toward Madison.
"You'll regret this."
She looked at him.
"I already regret you."
Then she walked away.
Weeks later, prosecutors charged Blake with child endangerment, custodial interference, fraud-related offenses, and witness intimidation.
But Ethan still had a problem.
The internet did not reverse itself as quickly as the truth did.
The kidnapping video remained everywhere.
His tuition deadline had passed.
His job was gone.
His paramedic program had dropped him.
Madison offered to pay.
Ethan refused.
"I don't want your money."
"Then what do you want?"
He looked at her.
"I want my life back."
Madison knew she could not give him that.
So she decided to do the one thing Blake had always feared most.
May you like
She stopped trying to control the story.
And told all of it.
