A Bed With No Locks

Chapter 03 - A Bed With No Locks

The emergency room smelled of antiseptic, burnt coffee, and the kind of exhaustion that never made the news.

A nurse photographed Nora’s injuries and asked the questions quietly. Had this happened before? Did she feel safe going home? Was there a weapon in the apartment?

Nora answered yes, no, and not that she knew of.

Lily sat beside the bed with both hands wrapped around a paper cup she had not touched. She looked younger than twenty-one.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“From what? The truth?”

Nora had no defense for that.

Lily’s mother had died when she was seven. Julian married Nora the following year, and for more than a decade, Nora had packed lunches, attended school conferences, and sat outside Lily’s bedroom during panic attacks. Their bond had survived adolescence, college, and Julian’s jealousy—until three months ago.

“He told me you wanted my trust shares,” Lily said. “He showed me emails.”

“I never wrote them.”

Lily stared into the coffee. “I called you a thief.”

“You were lied to.”

“I still said it.”

The doctor returned with discharge papers and a warning about concussion symptoms. Nora was advised not to be alone.

Lily took her to a small apartment above a closed florist shop on the North Side. It belonged to Mrs. Alvarez, Nora’s former drafting teacher, who had once told her that every building revealed the values of the person who designed it.

The apartment had old radiators, uneven floors, and a bedroom door with a lock on the inside.

Nora stood in that doorway for a long time.

At 2:13 a.m., her phone began to vibrate.

Messages from board members arrived one after another.

Julian had sent a company-wide statement claiming Nora had suffered a “private medical crisis” after becoming violent at home. He had placed her on immediate leave and scheduled an emergency board meeting to remove her as chief design officer.

A video followed.

It showed only seven seconds from the penthouse security camera: Nora reaching toward Julian, Julian stepping back, and Nora falling. The sound had been removed.

Lily watched over her shoulder.

“He edited it,” she said.

“Yes.”

“Then we show them the rest.”

Nora checked the file information. The building’s system showed the original recording had already been deleted.
