The Empty Construction Tower

Chapter 13 - The Empty Construction Tower
Nora refused to bring Lily.
Lily came anyway.
At eleven-forty, Detective Ellis and two plainclothes officers positioned themselves near the unfinished waterfront tower. They could not arrest Julian for a threatening photograph, but they agreed to remain close.
The tower rose forty stories above the river, wrapped in black safety netting. Wind moved through open concrete floors.
Julian waited in the model apartment on the tenth level. Temporary lights cast long shadows across expensive furniture no future buyer had yet touched.
He looked older than he had three days earlier.
“You brought police,” he said.
“You brought my father’s stolen page,” Nora replied.
Julian held up the document.
Lily stepped from behind a concrete column. “Why did you ask for me?”
His expression softened with practiced precision. “Because she is turning you against me.”
“No. You did that yourself.”
Julian offered a deal. Nora would sign the original transfer and state that Camille forged the financial papers alone. In return, he would restore Lily’s trust, return Grace’s house, and fund repairs to the evacuated towers.
Nora almost admired the structure of it. He had stolen three things, then offered to return them as gifts.
“What happens to you?” she asked.
“I keep the company.”
“And Camille?”
“She goes to prison.”
Lily’s voice broke. “You would send her to prison for what you did?”
Julian turned on her. “Everything I did was for this family.”
“No,” Lily said. “Everything you did was so the family could never leave.”
He reached for her.
Nora stepped between them.
For one suspended second, the penthouse repeated itself: Julian looming, Nora refusing to move, Lily watching.
But this time Nora was not alone on the floor.
Detective Ellis entered with the officers.
Julian tore the ledger page in half and threw both pieces into a portable heater.
Ben Mercer, who had been checking the building’s unsafe temporary wiring, pulled the plug. One half of the page blackened at the edge. The other survived.
It contained Thomas Bennett’s signature.
May you like
Julian’s signature had been on the burned half.
And he smiled as if the fire had saved him.
