The Signature Beneath the Ink

Chapter 14 - The Signature Beneath the Ink
The surviving half-page seemed useless.
Then Malcolm Reed noticed faint pressure marks below Thomas Bennett’s signature. The ledger had been filled out on stacked carbon sheets. Even where Julian’s ink had burned, the indentation remained.
A forensic document examiner recovered his name.
The discovery gave prosecutors leverage, but not yet a complete fraud case. Julian’s lawyers argued that the 2009 page had nothing to do with the new housing thefts.
Meanwhile, the displaced families grew angrier.
At a city hearing, a mother named Keisha Brooks stood and asked Nora why residents should trust any Bennett or Cross again.
Nora did not offer a polished answer.
“You should not trust my name,” she said. “Trust only what I do next, and check every number yourself.”
She proposed placing her remaining shares into an independent repair trust controlled by tenants, engineers, and union representatives. The decision would leave her with almost no personal wealth.
Grace stared at her from the back row.
Afterward she said, “Dad spent his life trying to preserve those shares for us.”
“He preserved them by hiding the truth.”
“And you’re giving them away?”
“I’m giving control to the people who live inside the consequences.”
Grace walked off without answering.
That evening, Lily learned her university account had been closed. She took a waitressing shift at Mrs. Alvarez’s cousin’s restaurant and refused Nora’s apology.
“This is not your debt,” Nora told her.
“It became mine when I believed him over you.”
Nora helped her tie the apron.
Across town, Camille entered formal cooperation with prosecutors. She provided emails, construction photographs, and the name of Julian’s private accountant.
The accountant had disappeared.
His wife told investigators he left carrying one suitcase and a red notebook.
Two hours later, Nora received a photograph from an unknown number.
The accountant was sitting in Grace’s kitchen.
