The Daughter at the Door

Chapter 02 - The Daughter at the Door

The penthouse doors opened before Julian could reach the phone.

Lily Cross stepped out carrying a small bakery box tied with blue ribbon. Her dark coat was wet from the evening rain, and her face still held the hopeful expression of someone who had come to repair a family argument.

That expression disappeared when she saw Nora on the floor.

“Dad,” Lily said slowly, “what happened?”

Julian moved between them. “She fell. She’s been drinking again.”

Nora almost laughed. Julian had used that lie so often it sounded rehearsed even to him.

Lily looked toward the untouched champagne on the table, then at Camille near the bar. “Why is she here?”

Camille stood. “Lily, this is not what it looks like.”

“It looks like my stepmother is bleeding while you’re sitting in her house.”

Julian’s voice sharpened. “Enough.”

Two building security officers appeared behind Lily. She had called them from the elevator after hearing Nora’s whisper and Julian’s order to put down the phone.

Julian switched instantly from rage to charm. “Gentlemen, my wife is having an episode. We can handle this privately.”

One guard knelt beside Nora. “Ma’am, do you need medical help?”

Nora looked at Lily.

For years, she had protected the girl from the ugliest parts of Julian. She had covered bruises with makeup, canceled dinners, and blamed migraines. She had believed silence was a form of love.

Lily’s eyes filled, but she did not look away.

“Yes,” Nora said. “I need help.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

Lily set the cake box on the floor. Through its clear lid, Nora saw the words written in blue icing: FAMILY DINNER—FRESH START.

“I came because Dad said you wanted to apologize,” Lily told her.

Nora shook her head. “I never said that.”

Julian reached for Lily’s arm, but she stepped back.

The security officers helped Nora to her feet. As she passed Julian, he leaned close enough that only she could hear.

“If you leave this apartment, you leave with nothing.”

Nora steadied herself against the wall.

“Then nothing will have to be enough.”

In the elevator, Lily pressed the lobby button with a trembling hand.

Just before the doors closed, Camille called Nora’s name.

She held up the unsigned transfer papers—and slipped one folded page into her own purse.
