The Mother’s Last Lesson

Chapter 16 - The Mother’s Last Lesson

Nora watched the press conference twice.

Rose said the company required stability and that “family disputes must not destroy the livelihoods of innocent employees.” She did not mention the assault, the forged loans, or Julian’s treatment of her.

Lily felt betrayed.

“She chose him,” she said.

Nora was not certain.

Rose had spent forty years in boardrooms. Every word she used had weight, and every word she avoided had more.

The next morning, Rose called a mandatory meeting for all directors, lenders, project managers, and union representatives. Julian arrived smiling.

Rose began by accepting the interim position.

Then she announced that under the company charter, an interim chief executive could order a complete forensic audit without a board vote.

“I have done so,” she said.

Julian’s smile disappeared.

She also froze executive bonuses, suspended document destruction, and placed all Cross family shares—including her own—into temporary oversight.

“You used me,” Julian said.

Rose looked at him with a grief so old it had become calm. “I gave you one final chance to walk into this room and tell the truth voluntarily.”

“You embarrassed me in public.”

“No. I stopped protecting you from the shape of your own choices.”

The auditors received Owen’s notebook, Camille’s emails, Nora’s plans, and Lily’s trust records. Within hours, they traced the missing housing money through seven shell companies controlled by Julian.

One payment stood out.

Two million dollars had gone to a private medical group that declared Rose incompetent.

Another payment had gone to Daniel Price, the Bennett family attorney and notary on the forged deed.

Detective Ellis arrested Daniel before sunset.

Julian left headquarters through a private garage before investigators could question him.

His passport had been flagged, but his company helicopter was missing from its hangar.

Lily received a voice message from him.

“I am going to the lake house,” he said. “Your mother left something there that you deserve to know.”

Lily listened again.

“My mother?”

Nora felt the room tilt.

Julian had always claimed Lily’s mother died in a one-car accident caused by icy roads.

The police report had never been shown to Lily.

And the lake house had belonged to her mother before Julian inherited it.
