The Final Confrontation

Chapter 09 - The Final Confrontation

Sirens wailed in the distance, their red and blue lights flashing through the high stained-glass windows of the Vance estate. The Chief of Police had already pulled out his cuffs, placing Marcus Vance under arrest on charges of financial fraud and obstruction of justice, while two officers escorted a screaming, hysterical Vanessa toward a waiting police cruiser.

The partygoers scrambled out of the mansion in a state of chaotic panic, swarming by news reporters who had already arrived at the front gates.

Adrian stood near the grand entrance, watching the empire he had feared for so long crumble into dust in less than an hour.

“Adrian,” Knox’s voice came through an earpiece. “We have a problem.”

Adrian tapped his ear. “What is it?”

“Julian Sterling,” Knox said, his tone grim. “When the police raided Marcus’s corporate offices twenty minutes ago based on our leak, Julian panicked. He realized Marcus was burned. My satellite tracking picked up his cell signal moving toward your old family house.”

Adrian’s heart stopped. “My old house? The house is empty! Clara and Caleb are—”

Adrian froze.

He had told Clara to go to their late parents’ old lake cottage in the woods outside the city. But on the phone earlier, when Clara was panicked, she had mentioned going back to the old house first to pick up Caleb’s favorite stuffed bear that had been left in the playroom closet.

“Clara!” Adrian screamed into his phone, spinning around and sprinting toward his car.

He dialed her number desperately. It rang three times before going straight to voicemail.

“Pick up, damn it, pick up!” Adrian roared, throwing his car into drive and peeling out of the Vance driveway, leaving smoke and tire tracks on the manicured lawn.

Twenty minutes later, Adrian’s car skidded to a halt outside his original family home—the quiet suburban house where Sarah had lived, where Caleb was born.

The front door was wide open, swinging gently in the wind.

Adrian drew his pistol, his hands steady despite the adrenaline surging through his blood. He stepped quietly onto the porch, his boots echoing on the wet wood.

“Clara?” he whispered into the dark entryway.

Silence.

He moved through the dark hallway toward the living room. The furniture was covered in white dust sheets.

Standing near the fireplace, holding a silver revolver in his right hand and holding a crying Clara by the shoulder, was Julian Sterling.

Julian looked older, his hair graying at the temples, his face hollowed out by years of hiding in the shadows. But his eyes were still full of the same cruel, narcissistic madness that had ruined Sarah’s life.

On the rug behind Julian, huddled in a corner behind a dust sheet, was Caleb, sobbing softly into his knees.

“Put the gun down, Adrian,” Julian said smoothly, tightening his grip on Clara’s shoulder, pressing the barrel of his revolver against her temple. “Or your sister dies right here.”
