The Shadow of the Past

Chapter 02 - The Shadow of the Past
The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting long, sharp shadows across the floor of the master bedroom. Adrian hadn’t slept a single minute.
He sat on the edge of the oversized bed, watching Caleb sleep under three thick down comforters. The little boy’s fever had finally broken around 3:00 AM after Dr. Evans, the family pediatrician and a trusted friend, came over under absolute secrecy to check on him.
“Physically, he’ll recover,” Dr. Evans had told Adrian in quiet tones in the kitchen last night. “Mild hypothermia, severe bruising around the abdomen from that chain, and emotional trauma. But mentally, Adrian… he’s terrified. You need to keep him safe.”
Adrian looked down at his phone. There were already fourteen missed calls from Marcus Vance—Vanessa’s father and the principal investor in Adrian’s architecture firm, Vance & Sterling. There were also three text messages from Vanessa’s high-powered lawyer, outlining a immediate "separation agreement" and threatening legal action if Adrian leaked any security footage to the press.
They thought this was about business. They thought this was a negotiation.
Adrian stood up, pulled on a dark wool coat, and walked down into his private home office. He locked the heavy wooden door behind him. He walked over to the mahogany desk, opened the bottom drawer, and pulled out a worn, wooden memory box that had belonged to Sarah, his late wife.
Sarah had died in a tragic car accident four weeks after Caleb’s second birthday. For two years, Adrian had cherished her memory, raising Caleb as the physical manifestation of the deep love they had shared. He had never questioned Caleb’s parentage. Not once. They had the same sandy-blonde hair, the same quiet, observant nature.
Or did they?
With hands that shook slightly, Adrian opened the box. Inside were old photographs, handwritten love letters from their college days, and Sarah’s personal journal.
He flipped toward the back pages of the journal, searching for the months leading up to Caleb’s conception. His eyes scanned the faint blue ink.
May 14th: Adrian is in London for the stadium project for three weeks. The house is so quiet. I hate being alone in this big city.
May 22nd: Saw Julian today at the gallery opening. He hasn't changed. He still looks at me like he owns me. I told him it was over years ago, but he won't listen. He knows things about the company that could ruin Adrian. I'm so scared.
Adrian’s blood ran cold. Julian.
Julian Sterling. Adrian’s former business partner, a brilliant but ruthless developer who had vanished from the city three years ago following a massive corporate fraud scandal that nearly destroyed their firm. Adrian had been the one to blow the whistle on Julian, forcing him into exile and stripping him of his assets.
Adrian rapidly flipped the pages.
June 2nd: God forgive me. I had no choice. If I didn't meet him, he promised he would destroy Adrian’s career. He forced himself into my apartment. I feel sick. I can't tell Adrian. If Adrian finds out, he'll kill him, or Julian will ruin us both.
The notebook slipped from Adrian’s numb fingers and hit the hardwood floor.
The air left his lungs in a sharp, painful gasp. The world around him seemed to tilt on its axis. All those years, he thought Sarah’s anxiety during her pregnancy was due to her fragile health. He thought her quiet tearful moments in the middle of the night were just mood swings.
She was keeping a nightmare secret.
Was Caleb Julian’s son? Was the boy he had held, bathed, read bedtime stories to, and loved more than his own life… the offspring of his worst enemy?
A sharp knock at the office door shattered the agonizing silence.
“Adrian?”
It was the voice of his younger sister, Clara. She had rushed over at 6:00 AM after Adrian sent her a desperate text message asking her to come watch Caleb.
Adrian quickly picked up the journal, shoved it back into the wooden box, and locked the drawer. He took a deep breath, smoothing down his jacket before opening the door.
Clara stood there, her eyes wide with deep concern. “Adrian, you look like a ghost. Is Caleb okay?”
“He’s sleeping,” Adrian said, his voice completely flat, robbed of emotion. “Thank you for coming, Clara.”
“Of course I came! What on earth happened last night? You said you kicked Vanessa out? Did she really touch Caleb?” Clara’s voice rose in pitch.
“She’s gone. She’s never coming back,” Adrian said coldly. He walked past her toward the front entrance, grabbing his car keys off the marble counter.
“Where are you going?” Clara asked, following him into the foyer. “You can’t go to work like this! You look like you’re ready to kill someone!”
“I’m not going to work,” Adrian said, opening the heavy front door. The cool morning air hit his face, but he felt nothing. “I’m going to get answers.”

“Answers from who?”
Adrian stopped on the threshold, looking back at the upper landing where Caleb’s room was. “From a DNA clinic. And then… from Julian Sterling.”
