The Shadowy Architect

Chapter 03 - The Shadowy Architect
The private laboratory sat tucked away in an industrial park on the outskirts of the city, away from the prying eyes of the media and high-society gossips.
Adrian sat in a sleek, sterile room, holding a small cotton swab sealed inside a plastic hazard bag. Inside his pocket was a second bag containing a pair of Caleb’s baby scissors with strands of the boy’s soft hair.
A middle-aged doctor in a crisp lab coat walked in, holding a tablet.
“Mr. Vance—excuse me, Mr. Sterling,” the doctor corrected himself, checking the paperwork. “You requested an expedited rush on a paternity test. Standard procedure takes five to seven business days, but with the premium service, we can process the comparative markers in twenty-four hours.”
“Do it,” Adrian said, his voice flat. He pulled out a black credit card and laid it on the stainless steel table. “I don’t care what it costs. I need absolute certainty.”
“Understood,” the doctor said, taking the sample bags. “We will cross-reference your cheek swab with the child’s hair follicles. The results will be uploaded directly to a secure, encrypted server. Only you will have the access key.”
Adrian walked out of the clinic into the sharp gray afternoon. The seed of doubt inside him had grown into a strangling vine. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Caleb’s blue eyes—eyes that looked tragically like Sarah’s, but could easily belong to Julian Sterling.
If he isn't my son... do I still love him?
The thought made Adrian feel sick to his stomach. He hated himself for even asking the question. Caleb was an innocent child. He was four years old. He didn't ask for any of this.
His phone buzzed in his coat pocket. It was an unlisted number.
Adrian swiped the screen and brought the phone to his ear. “Hello?”
“You always did have a terrible temper, Adrian,” a deep, smooth voice purred through the speaker. It was a voice Adrian hadn't heard in nearly four years, yet it made every muscle in his body instantly lock up.
“Julian,” Adrian spat, his grip tightening on the phone so hard the glass screen cracked under the pressure.
“In the flesh. Well, metaphorically speaking,” Julian chuckled chillingly. “I heard you had a rather noisy evening at the estate. Vanessa called my associates in quite a panic. She says you threw her out in the rain like garbage.”
“She chained a four-year-old child outside in freezing weather, Julian! If you have anything to do with her, I swear to God I will put you both in prison!”
“Oh, calm down, old friend,” Julian said lazily. “Vanessa is a foolish, cruel woman. She lacks vision. I merely suggested to her a few months ago that she look deeper into your little family dynamic. I gave her a few hints about Sarah’s past. I didn't tell her to lock the kid outside. That was all her own twisted initiative.”
Adrian stepped into an alleyway beside his car, his breath catching in his throat. “What did you do to Sarah?”
A long, agonizing pause stretched over the line.
“Sarah was a lovely woman, Adrian. Very protective of you. Very protective of your fragile little ego,” Julian said, his tone turning sinister. “She came to me to protect your company, yes. But what happened between us… well, let’s just say she took a secret to her grave. A secret that is currently running around your house calling you ‘Daddy.’”
“You’re lying,” Adrian choked out, though his heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
“Am I?” Julian sneered. “Take the test, Adrian. Look at the DNA strands. And when you realize that every time you look into that little boy’s eyes, you are looking at my blood, ask yourself… how much do you really love him?”
“Where are you?” Adrian snarled, tears of pure rage blinding his vision. “Where are you, you coward?!”

“I’m closer than you think, Adrian. And soon, I’m coming to collect what belongs to me. My company, my legacy… and my son.”
The line went dead.
