The Bloodline

Chapter 05 - The Bloodline
The rain had returned, slicking the neon-lit streets of the city as Adrian walked aimlessly through the downpour.
He had lost everything in six hours. His career, his wealth, his reputation, his home. Everything he had poured his blood, sweat, and tears into for a decade had been swept away by the ruthless machinery of the Vance family.
He sat in his car—the only asset still registered under his personal name—parked in a dark alley behind a 24-hour diner. His smartphone buzzed on the passenger seat.
An email notification flickered on the screen.
Sender: Apex Genetics Laboratory.
Subject: Urgent - Paternity Analysis Results [CONFIDENTIAL]
Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat. His hand hovered over the glowing screen for almost a minute, shaking uncontrollably.
This was the moment. The final piece of the puzzle.
If the test showed that he was not Caleb’s father, his life as he knew it was officially over. He would be holding the child of the man who ruined his business, the child born of a secret betrayal that had haunted Sarah until her death.
He closed his eyes, prayed a silent, desperate prayer, and tapped the file to open the PDF.
He scrolled past the dense genetic jargon, the charts of allele frequencies, and the technical terminology, rushing straight to the final line at the bottom of the page:
PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.999%
RESULT: ADRIAN STERLING IS THE BIOLOGICAL FATHER OF CALEB STERLING.
Adrian stared at the words. He read them once. Twice. A third time.
A ragged, choking sob escaped his throat, followed by a wild, hysterical laugh that echoed inside the small space of the car.
Julian had lied.
Julian had manipulated Sarah, tormented her, and used her fear to build a massive psychological weapon against Adrian. Julian had fed subtle lies to Vanessa, knowing her cruel, insecure nature would push her to destroy Adrian from the inside out.
Caleb wasn't Julian’s son. Caleb was his. His true blood. His real son.
The realization hit Adrian like a physical wave of electric energy. The fog of doubt that had clouded his mind instantly evaporated, replaced by an blinding, incandescent fury.
They had tried to destroy him. They had tried to make him hate his own child. They had locked his innocent son in the cold like a dog, deleted the evidence, stolen his company, and thrown him onto the street.
They thought he was broken. They thought he would fold and surrender.
They had no idea what they had just unleashed.
Adrian wiped his tears away with the back of his hand. His face hardened into a mask of pure, murderous determination. He started the car engine, the deep rumble echoing through the dark alley.
He pulled out his phone and dialed a contact he hadn't called in five years—a secret, dark-web investigative consultant named Knox, who specialized in corporate warfare and unearthing the filthy secrets of billionaires like Marcus Vance.
“Knox,” Adrian said, his tone entirely devoid of fear.
“Adrian? I haven't heard your voice since we put Julian Sterling on the FBI watchlist,” Knox replied, his voice raspy and mechanical over an encrypted line. “What do you need?”
“I need a war,” Adrian replied staring into the dark rain. “I want Marcus Vance destroyed. I want Vanessa behind bars. And I want Julian Sterling dragged out of the shadows. Tell me what it costs.”

“For you, Adrian? A favor,” Knox said with a dark chuckle. “Where do we start?”
“We start with the one thing Marcus Vance fears more than losing money,” Adrian sneered. “His dirty ledger.”
