The Underground Alliance

Chapter 06 - The Underground Alliance
The safehouse was a dilapidated brick warehouse near the docks, far removed from the pristine skyscrapers of the financial district. Inside, rows of computer monitors cast a cold, flickering blue light over tables covered in hard drives, server racks, and wiretaps.
Knox was a tall, gaunt man with graying hair and eyes that looked like they hadn't seen daylight in a decade. He tossed a thick paper folder onto the desk in front of Adrian.
“You’ve been playing too clean for too long, Adrian,” Knox said, taking a drag from a cigarette. “You built buildings. Marcus Vance builds empires on bodies and blackmail.”
Adrian leaned over the folder. Inside were financial records, offshore bank transfers, and photographic evidence of illegal shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands.
“Marcus’s private equity firm isn't just funding real estate,” Knox explained, pointing a nicotine-stained finger at a flow chart. “He’s laundering money for overseas syndicates. And guess who’s been managing those offshore accounts for the past three years?”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “Julian Sterling.”
“Bingo,” Knox smirked. “When Julian fled the country after your whistleblowing incident, he didn't run away empty-handed. He ran straight into the arms of Marcus Vance. Marcus protected him, gave him a new identity, and used Julian’s financial genius to run his illegal money-laundering network. Vanessa wasn't just your wife, Adrian—she was the middleman keeping Julian and Marcus connected.”
The entire terrifying tapestry finally made sense.
Vanessa’s marriage to Adrian wasn't a whirlwind romance. It was a calculated corporate invasion. Marcus and Julian had wanted to seize control of Adrian’s firm from the inside, using Vanessa as the Trojan horse. But when Caleb was born, and Adrian began shifting his focus away from work to be a father, the plan slowed down.
So they decided to eliminate Caleb emotionally, break Adrian mentally, and strip him of his legacy.
“They thought I’d be too weak to fight back,” Adrian whispered, his jaw clenching.
“Well, you were weak,” Knox said bluntly. “You were a nice guy with a good heart. But nice guys get eaten alive by sharks like Marcus Vance. Are you ready to become a shark, Adrian?”
“I don’t want to be a shark,” Adrian said, looking at a picture of Marcus Vance pinned to the wall. “I want to be the hunter.”
At that moment, Adrian’s phone chimed. It was a secure text message from Clara.
Clara: Adrian, someone is watching the safehouse where I brought Caleb. A dark SUV with tinted windows has been parked across the street for two hours. Caleb is crying. What do I do?
Adrian’s heart dropped. Marcus wasn't just trying to bankrupt him—he was trying to corner him, to take Caleb as leverage so Adrian would never go to the authorities.
“They found my boy,” Adrian said, standing up so fast he knocked his chair over.
Knox grabbed a heavy black duffel bag from under the desk and threw it to Adrian. “Then stop playing by their rules. Take this.”
Adrian unzipped the bag. Inside were two untraceable burner phones, a tracking device jammer, and a matte-black 9mm pistol.

“I don’t want to shoot anyone, Knox,” Adrian said, staring at the weapon.
“You won't have to if you’re smart,” Knox replied. “But if Marcus’s mercenaries get their hands on your son again, you’ll wish you had it. Move. Now.”
