Uninvited Guests

Chapter 08 - Uninvited Guests
The Vance family estate was a sprawling, gated mansion situated on thirty acres of private woodland. Tonight, the grounds were ablaze with light.
Marcus Vance was hosting his annual autumn charity gala—a high-society gathering of senators, judges, police commissioners, and billionaire investors. It was Marcus’s favorite night of the year, a public display of his absolute power and influence over the state’s elite.
Inside the grand ballroom, chandeliers cast a warm gold light over women in diamond necklaces and men in tailored tuxedos.
Vanessa walked through the crowd, holding a flute of champagne, laughing charmingly at a joke told by a supreme court justice. She looked radiant, completely unbothered by the fact that twenty-four hours ago she had chained a four-year-old child to a patio floor.
At the edge of the ballroom, Marcus stood talking to the Chief of Police, sipping scotch.
“Marcus, I heard a rumor that Adrian Sterling was removed from the firm today,” the Chief said casually. “Everything alright with that situation?”
Marcus smiled smoothly, patting the Chief on the shoulder. “Just a routine restructuring, David. Adrian was a talented architect, but mentally... unstable. He’s taking a long personal leave. My family is handling it.”
“Shame,” the Chief nodded. “Good man, or so I thought.”
Suddenly, the massive double doors of the grand ballroom swung open with a dramatic bang that echoed over the classical string quartet playing near the stage.
The music ground to a sudden, awkward halt. Conversations dissolved into shocked murmurs.
Walking down the grand velvet staircase into the center of the ballroom was Adrian Sterling.
He was not wearing a tuxedo. He wore a dark leather jacket, muddy boots, and a wet coat. His hair was messy, his eyes burning with an intense, terrifying light. In his left hand, he held a sleek black flash drive.
Beside him walked Knox, dressed in a sharp but mysterious dark suit, carrying a portable satellite uplink laptop.
Vanessa dropped her champagne glass. The crystal shattered across the marble floor, sparking a gasps from the guests.
“Adrian?” Marcus growled, his face darkening with instant rage. He motioned discreetly to the four armed private security guards stationed around the room. “What the hell is the meaning of this?”
“Don’t move, Marcus,” Adrian’s voice boomed across the silent room, echoing off the high ceilings. “And don’t order your guards to touch me. Because right now, every speaker and projection screen in this room is connected to Knox’s server.”
On the wall behind the orchestra stage, a massive 200-inch projection screen flickered to life.
Marcus’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror as the screen displayed financial documents—tax fraud ledgers, illegal wire transactions, and offshore bank accounts detailing millions of dollars in laundered money signed by Marcus Vance and Julian Sterling.
The crowd gasped. The Chief of Police slowly took a step back from Marcus, his eyes wide with shock.
“Shut it off! SHUT IT OFF!” Marcus screamed at his IT staff, but Knox simply pressed a button on his tablet, locking down the mansion’s wireless network.
“You wanted to destroy my life, Marcus,” Adrian said, walking slowly down the center aisle of the ballroom, every guest parting like the Red Sea to let him through. “You wanted to wipe my name out, steal my firm, and protect your psychopath daughter.”
Adrian turned his gaze toward Vanessa, who was trembling, backing away until her spine hit a marble pillar.
“And you, Vanessa,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that carried through the silent room. “You thought you deleted the evidence. You thought you wiped the home servers.”
Adrian pointed at the screen. The financial documents vanished, replaced by a crystal-clear, high-definition video feed from the night before.
The entire ballroom watched in stunned, horrified silence as the video showed Vanessa dragging little Caleb out onto the wet patio, locking the silver chain around his tiny waist, placing the dog bowl beside him, and locking the glass door.
The audio roared through the high-end sound system: “You cry too much... He’s not even your real son.”
Cruel. Cold. Undeniable.
Gasps of utter disgust erupted from the wealthy guests. High-society women covered their mouths in horror, looking at Vanessa as if she were a venomous snake.
“No… no, that’s fake! It’s an AI video! He made it up!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking in wild, unhinged panic. “Daddy, tell them it’s fake!”

Marcus couldn't speak. His face was gray, his chest heaving as he realized that fifty of the most powerful people in the state—including judges and the chief of police—had just witnessed his daughter committing child abuse and his own corporate crimes.
“It’s over, Marcus,” Adrian said, stepping directly up to the old billionaire. “You lose.”
