The Breach

Chapter 09 - The Breach
Marcus pointed the revolver straight at David’s head, his finger tightening on the trigger.
“You were always too soft, David,” Marcus spat, his voice filled with desperate, manic fury. “You never had what it takes to protect what was yours. Clara died because she wouldn't shut up, and now you’re going to join her!”
David didn't flinch. He looked directly into the barrel of the gun, his eyes cold and fearless.
“I’m not soft anymore, Marcus,” David whispered. “And you forgot to check the room.”
“POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON!”
CRASH!
The wooden doors leading from the dining room were kicked completely off their hinges! SWAT officers flooded the foyer from the kitchen and side entrance, their assault rifle laser sights painting red dots across Marcus’s chest and forehead.
“DROP THE GUN NOW! ON YOUR KNEES!”
The sheer shock of the ambush caused Marcus to jump back. Stumbling over the entryway rug, he lost his footing and dropped the revolver onto the hardwood floor.
David didn't waste a millisecond. Driven by years of pain and rage, he lunged forward, tackling Marcus to the ground before the lawyer could reach for the fallen firearm. David pinned Marcus’s arms against the floor, delivering a sharp, crushing blow straight to Marcus’s jaw.
Marcus let out a muffled scream of pain as his head slammed against the wood.
SWAT officers rushed in, pulling David back while forcefully grabbing Marcus, pinning his arms behind his back, and slapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.
“Target secured! Room clear!” an officer yelled into his radio.
Sergeant Miller walked into the foyer, kicking Marcus’s revolver safely away across the floor. He looked down at the disgraced lawyer, who was coughing blood onto his expensive Italian suit.
“Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, grand larceny, fraud, and attempted murder,” Sergeant Miller stated loudly. “You have the right to remain silent.”
Marcus looked up at David, his face bruised, his eyes filled with pure, defeat-ridden rage. “You ruined everything, David! Everything!”

David looked down at him with complete contempt. “You ruined yourself the moment you touched my family.”
Officers dragged Marcus out the front door, forcing him into the waiting police van beside Evelyn. As the red and blue lights flashed across the driveway, the two conspirators were driven away into the dark night, destined to face the full, unyielding weight of the justice system.
