The Trap is Set

Chapter 07 - The Trap is Set

The pieces of the terrifying puzzle finally slotted together with horrifying precision. Marcus Vance, the trusted family lawyer who had managed David’s millions, had been embezzling money from David’s corporate accounts for years. When Clara began suspecting accounting irregularities four years ago, Marcus had brought in Evelyn—a professional con artist with a criminal record in three states—to eliminate Clara and take control of the family from the inside.

“He sent her to marry me,” David said, the realization burning through his heart like acid. “To keep me calm, to control my money, and to make sure I never looked into my own accounts.”

“And when your daughter started getting older and asking questions,” Sergeant Miller added coldly, “Evelyn started abusing her to break her spirit so she’d remain silent.”

“Where is Marcus now?” David demanded, turning to Miller.

“He’s currently at his penthouse downtown,” Officer Vance reported, looking at his mobile terminal. “His office says he’s scheduled to fly out to Switzerland on a private charter at 11:00 PM tonight.”

“It’s 9:30 PM right now,” Miller noted, looking at his watch. “If we issue an arrest warrant now, his lawyers will tie it up in court or tip him off before SWAT can breach his building.”

David stood up straight, a cold, dangerous determination washing over him. “He doesn't know Evelyn’s been arrested yet. Her phone is still in the house, right?”

Miller narrowed his eyes. “Yes. We secured it as evidence.”

“Give me her phone,” David said firmly. “I know how Marcus talks to her. If I send him a text from her number saying the transfer is complete and I need him to come to the house to sign the final authorization, he’ll come here himself.”

“Mr. Reynolds, setting a sting operation is police business—” Miller began.

“He destroyed my family!” David interrupted, his eyes blazing with unyielding fire. “He stole my wife, he let this monster hurt my little girl, and he’s trying to walk away with millions! Let me bring him here!”

Sergeant Miller stared into David’s resolute eyes for a long moment. He knew that catching a high-profile corporate lawyer like Marcus Vance required catching him red-handed with the physical documents or illicit funds.

“Alright,” Miller agreed sternly. “We set the trap here. But you follow my exact instructions, wear a hidden wire, and let my officers make the arrest. Clear?”

“Clear,” David replied without a second of hesitation.

Ten minutes later, using Evelyn’s confiscated phone, David typed out a short, precise message to Marcus Vance:

“David found the old tax folders. He’s asking questions about the offshore transfers. I need you at the house right now before he calls the bank.”

Three minutes passed in tense, suffocating silence.

Then, Evelyn’s phone buzzed with a reply from Marcus:

“I’m on my way. Don't let him touch anything.”
