Light in the Darkness

Chapter 10 - Light in the Darkness

Three weeks later, the morning sun shone brightly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of a beautiful new oceanfront home three hundred miles away from Evergreen Terrace.

The air smelled of fresh salt breeze, clean pine, and hot pancakes cooking on the stove.

David stood at the kitchen island, pouring fresh orange juice into two small glasses. The house was bright, airy, and full of natural light—a complete contrast to the dark, secret-filled mansion they had left behind forever.

The old house had been sold, its sub-basement demolished by city authorities. Through the evidence recovered from the servers, forensic teams had located Clara’s remains in a quiet state park, allowing David and Maya to finally give her a proper, peaceful memorial service surrounded by family who truly loved her.

Evelyn and Marcus Vance were both held without bail, facing life sentences without the possibility of parole on dozens of federal charges.

A pair of soft, small arms wrapped around David’s waist from behind.

David turned around with a warm smile, scooping Maya up into his arms. Maya was laughing—a bright, clear, beautiful sound that filled every corner of the room. Her skin was healed, her eyes were bright, and the fear that had once consumed her life had completely vanished.

“Good morning, sweetie,” David kissed her cheek gently. “Ready for your first day at the new school?”

“Yep!” Maya smiled, holding up a new colorful backpack decorated with bright yellow stars. “And after school, can we go down to the beach and build a giant sandcastle?”

“We can build the biggest sandcastle on the whole coast,” David promised, holding her tightly against his chest.

Maya rested her head on her father’s shoulder, looking out the large glass window at the sun rising over the endless blue ocean.

The dark shadows of the past were gone forever, replaced by the warmth of a new beginning, a father’s unshakeable love, and a bright future that no one could ever steal from them again.
