The Confrontation

Chapter 08 - The Confrontation
By 10:15 PM, the Reynolds residence was pitch black from the outside. Police cruisers were hidden two blocks away down a side street. SWAT officers in dark tactical gear were positioned inside the garage and behind the perimeter trees surrounding the backyard.
David stood inside the dimly lit foyer, wearing a tiny microphone concealed under the collar of his shirt. Upstairs, Maya was safe inside an unmarked police transport with a child psychologist and armed guards.
The sound of a high-performance engine echoed down the quiet street. A sleek black luxury sedan pulled into the driveway, its headlights cutting through the darkness.
The driver's side door opened, and Marcus Vance stepped out. He was dressed in an expensive suit, carrying a heavy leather briefcase. He walked up the stone steps with fast, urgent strides and knocked firmly on the front door.
David took a deep, steadying breath, forced his emotions into a cold vault, and pulled the door open.
“David!” Marcus said, stepping inside immediately without waiting for an invitation, looking around the dark foyer nervously. “Where is Evelyn? She sent me a frantic text saying you were going through the old tax files!”
David closed the door behind Marcus, turning key in the deadbolt with a loud click.
“Evelyn isn't here right now, Marcus,” David said, his voice flat, calm, and hauntingly quiet.
Marcus paused, turning around to face David, his brow furrowed in confusion. “What do you mean she’s not here? Where is she? And why are all the lights off?”
David walked slowly toward the living room, standing right near the hidden entrance behind the wall.
“She’s currently sitting in the back of a police car in handcuffs, Marcus,” David said, looking straight into his lawyer’s eyes.
Marcus froze. The color drained from his face so fast it looked as if he had been struck by lightning. His grip on his briefcase tightened.
“David... what kind of joke is this?” Marcus forced a nervous laugh, taking a step back toward the door. “Did you two have a fight? Look, if you’re stressed out—”
“We found the sub-basement, Marcus,” David interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with deadly weight. “We found the server. We found Clara’s necklace. And we found the offshore bank accounts with your signature on every single transfer.”
Marcus stood paralyzed in the middle of the foyer. The fake, friendly demeanor he had maintained for years disintegrated completely, replaced by the panicked, frantic expression of a trapped animal.
“David... listen to me,” Marcus stammered, his hands beginning to shake. “You don't understand what happened. Evelyn forced me into this! She had dirt on me! She was the one who went after Clara!”
“You set the whole thing up!” David shouted, his control finally snapping as he took three aggressive steps toward Marcus. “You brought her into my life! You let her torture my daughter for two years! You stole my wife’s life!”

Marcus’s expression hardened. Realizing there was no way out through lies, his hand reached inside his suit jacket toward his inner pocket.
“I’m not going to prison, David,” Marcus snarled, pulling out a small silver revolver. “I have a flight in forty minutes. You should have just let it go!”
