The Unraveling

Chapter 06 - The Unraveling

“Vance! Code is 0-4-1-9-7-8! Punch it in now!” Sergeant Miller barked into his shoulder radio.

A long, agonizing pause settled over the lawn. The only sound was the hum of the idling police cruisers and the distant wail of arriving forensic vans.

Five seconds passed. Ten seconds.

Then, Vance’s voice crackled through the radio, filled with massive relief: “System disarmed! Thermite charges deactivated! The drives are safe!”

Evelyn let out a sharp gasp, realizing she had just given away her last piece of leverage. She slammed her head against the back of the seat, screaming in frustration as Officer Miller shut the patrol car door, locking her inside.

David leaned against the hood of the police car, his legs trembling so badly he could barely stand. He looked up as more federal and local investigation vehicles pulled into the driveway.

Sergeant Miller walked over to David, hand out holding a bottle of water. “That was impressive bluffing, Mr. Reynolds.”

“It wasn't entirely a bluff,” David muttered, taking a sip of water. “She left a tablet on the counter. I just didn't know if it had the cloud feed.”

“Well, it worked,” Miller said firmly. “Our tech team is heading down into that room now. If there are burial coordinates or ledger files on those hard drives, we’ll find them within the hour.”

Thirty minutes later, lead forensic investigator Dr. Aris walked out of the house carrying a thick black binder and a sealed hard drive enclosure.

“Mr. Reynolds,” Dr. Aris said, adjusting his glasses as he approached David and Sergeant Miller. “We’ve bypassed the encryption on the primary local drive. What we found goes far beyond what we initially suspected.”

David felt his chest tighten. “What did you find?”

Dr. Aris opened the binder, revealing printed financial records, property deeds, and forged power-of-attorney documents.

“Evelyn wasn't acting alone,” Dr. Aris explained gravely. “This was a systematic financial takeover operation targeting high-net-worth widowers and single fathers. Clara’s estate was systematically drained through a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands.”

“Who owns the shell corporation?” Sergeant Miller demanded.

Dr. Aris turned the page, pointing to a signature at the bottom of a fraudulent deed of trust.

“The registered agent of the corporation is someone you know very well, Mr. Reynolds,” Dr. Aris said softly. “It’s your corporate attorney and financial manager, Marcus Vance.”

David stared at the name on the paper, his mind reeling in absolute disbelief. Marcus Vance was his oldest friend. He was the man who had handled Clara’s estate after her disappearance, the man who had managed David’s investments, and the man who had introduced Evelyn to David at that support group five years ago.

“Marcus...” David whispered, his voice cracking. “He set the whole thing up.”
