The Cold Case

Chapter 04 - The Cold Case

David felt as if the ground beneath his feet had completely collapsed. He lunged toward the board, staring at his missing wife’s face.

Clara had disappeared on a rainy Tuesday evening. The police investigation had concluded she had likely fallen into the nearby river or fled the state, as no body was ever found. Six months later, broken and grieving, David had met Evelyn at a support group for families of missing persons. Evelyn had been so kind, so understanding, gradually stepping into his life to help him heal and raise Maya.

Now, pinned beneath Clara’s photograph, were detailed maps of the local state park, bank transfer documents showing millions of dollars moving into offshore accounts, and handwritten notes detailing Clara’s daily routines.

“Oh my God…” David gasped, his breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. “She didn't run away... Evelyn knew her.”

Sergeant Miller stepped closer to the board, using his gloved finger to lift a plastic evidence bag pinned near the bottom. Inside the bag was a silver pendant necklace with an engraved 'C'—Clara’s favorite necklace, the one she was wearing the day she disappeared.

“Mr. Reynolds,” Sergeant Miller said, his voice grim and heavy. “Your second wife didn't meet you by accident.”

David sank onto the metal chair near the desk, burying his face in his hands as tears burned his eyes. The sickening realization washed over him like a wave of pure horror. Evelyn hadn't just abused his daughter; she had orchestrated a cold, calculated takeover of his entire life, his wealth, and his family.

“Vance, call the forensic unit and the Chief,” Miller ordered sternly. “Tell them we have a major scene here. We need the full forensics team, ground-penetrating radar, and evidence technicians immediately.”

Officer Vance pulled out his radio and began making the call, but as he spoke, a high-pitched, rhythmic BEEP echoed through the concrete room.

BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...

Sergeant Miller’s head snapped toward the desk. Underneath the main surveillance monitor, a red digital display on a small black box had suddenly sprung to life.

The display was a countdown timer: 00:09:59... 00:09:58... 00:09:57...

“What is that?!” David shouted, jumping up from the chair. “Is that a bomb?!”

“No, look at the cables!” Officer Vance yelled, rushing over to examine the setup. “It’s connected to an array of high-power incendiary thermal drives installed behind the storage servers! It’s a automatic thermite destruction system!”

“A what?!” David panicked.

“It’s a self-destruct mechanism for physical data!” Miller realized, his eyes widening. “When that clock hits zero, high-temperature thermite charges will ignite, melting every hard drive, every document, and every piece of physical evidence in this room to liquid ash!”

“We have less than ten minutes!” David screamed. “Can’t you pull the plug?!”

“If we pull the plug without bypassing the secondary circuit, it will trigger the thermite instantly!” Vance warned, his forehead dripping with sweat. “We need the master override code, or everything in this room—including the truth about what happened to your first wife—is gone forever!”
