The Report No One Expected

Chapter 09 - The Report No One Expected

Robert did not touch the DNA report.

For several seconds, no one moved.

Laura stared at the envelope as though it might explode. Dana looked from Robert to Ethan and back again. Ethan, who had learned that adults often hid their worst news behind silence, pulled his hand away from the drawer.

“What is it?” he asked.

Robert read the label again. PATERNITY ANALYSIS — ROBERT JAMES HAYES / ETHAN DANIEL COLE.

Laura spoke first. “Daniel told me Ethan was his son.”

“He was,” Robert said.

The report showed Robert was not Ethan’s biological father.

It showed the opposite: a zero-percent probability of paternity.

Attached to it was a letter from Daniel.

Rob,

My mother hired someone to collect your DNA from the hospital after the accident. She planned to claim Laura had been unfaithful and that Ethan was yours. She believed scandal would help her challenge my marriage and control the trust. I ordered an independent test to protect all of us. Keep this because she may still use the lie when everything else fails.

Robert sat down on the steel bench.

Twelve years earlier, after the military crash that nearly killed him, Daniel had donated blood during surgery. Vivian had apparently built a story from the fact that Robert and Laura had been close while Daniel recovered.

The threat had never been spoken aloud. Daniel had seen it coming anyway.

Dana removed the missing trust page from the drawer. It carried the stamp of an independent trust company and the signature of its president. The amendment was valid. Vivian had no legal authority over Ethan’s inheritance.

That discovery gave prosecutors a motive for the forged visitation reports and attempted international trip. Vivian had recently borrowed millions against Hawthorne Holdings. Ethan’s trust owned a controlling block of company shares scheduled to transfer when he turned ten.

If Ethan remained under her guardianship overseas, she could petition a foreign court for broader control.

The story was no longer only about custody.

It was about money.

Laura closed her eyes. “She didn’t just want Ethan. She needed him.”

Ethan’s face changed. “Grandma said money had nothing to do with family.”

Robert crouched beside him. “People sometimes say the thing they most need others to believe.”

The bank manager returned with one final item from the drawer: a ledger showing three payments from Hawthorne Holdings to Vale Family Services.

One payment matched the month the visitation records changed.

One matched the day Laura’s medical records were obtained.

The last had been sent forty-eight hours before Flight 218.
