Twenty-Eight Minutes

Chapter 03 - Twenty-Eight Minutes

Airport police separated them within ninety seconds.

Vivian was taken to a private interview room with Martin Vale. Ethan remained behind Robert’s desk, wrapped in a gray airport blanket someone had found in the medical station. He looked smaller without the envelope in his hands.

Robert called the airline operations center and requested a security hold on Flight 218.

The supervisor hesitated. “We need a specific threat.”

“Possible unlawful removal of a minor under disputed guardianship.”

“That is a custody matter.”

“It becomes a federal matter when the child is placed on an international flight.”

The hold was granted for ten minutes.

Ten minutes was not enough.

Robert asked Ethan for the passport sleeve. The boy reached inside his jacket and pulled out a navy leather case. A small brass key was taped under the lining.

Locker 317 was two terminals away, beneath the airport rail station. Robert could not leave Ethan, and airport police would not search a locker based on a dead man’s private letter without additional cause.

Then Ethan said, “My mom is here.”

Robert turned. “At the airport?”

“She followed us. Grandma’s lawyer told the police Mom was dangerous. They took her downstairs.”

Robert called the airport detention office. No Laura Cole was listed.

He tried again under her maiden name.

Laura Bennett had been detained forty minutes earlier for allegedly violating a protective order.

The protective order had been filed by Vivian that morning.

Robert stared at the screen. It was too precise. Vivian had not simply planned a trip. She had built a legal maze around every person who might interfere.

A child-welfare investigator named Dana Brooks arrived with a tablet and a tired face. She read the guardianship order, then the letter from Daniel.

“This letter does not cancel a court order,” she said.

“What about the forged statement?” Robert asked.

“An accusation is not proof.”

Ethan looked from one adult to another. “The proof is in the locker.”

Dana’s expression softened. “I believe that you believe that, Ethan. But we have rules.”

The airline called back. Flight 218 would remain at the gate for eighteen more minutes. After that, the delay would trigger an automatic rescheduling decision.

Robert contacted the airport police commander and asked permission to secure Locker 317 pending a warrant. The commander refused to open it but agreed to place an officer beside it.

That left one path.

Robert called Judge Evelyn Mercer, whose signature appeared on the revocation document.

Her clerk said the judge was in court.

Robert sent a photograph of the document and waited.

Three minutes later, the clerk called back.

“Judge Mercer says that is not her signature,” she said. “And that case number belongs to a property dispute from 2018.”

Robert looked through the glass at Martin Vale.

The attorney had stopped smiling.
