Back to the Airport

Chapter 14 - Back to the Airport

The search began at 6:12 in the morning.

Police checked bus stations, parks, Daniel’s grave, Laura’s apartment, Vivian’s estate, and the old visitation center. Robert went to the one place everyone else considered too obvious.

The airport.

He found Ethan at the same glass counter where the story had begun.

The boy wore his black suit and held the empty brown envelope against his chest. The terminal was nearly silent at that hour. Cleaning machines moved across the floor. Departure boards flickered above rows of empty seats.

Robert approached slowly. “You scared a lot of people.”

“I’m sorry.”

“What did you come to finish?”

Ethan placed a folded letter on the counter. “Dad’s envelope stopped the plane. I thought mine could stop Grandma from lying.”

The letter was addressed to the judge.

Ethan had written in careful pencil:

I want to live with my mom. I also want to see my grandma if she tells the truth. I do not want adults to make me pick who I love. I want them to stop using me to win.

Robert read it twice.

“That is a good letter,” he said.

“Will the judge listen?”

“She will listen. That doesn’t mean she will do everything you ask.”

Ethan nodded. He seemed unsurprised by the limits of adults.

Laura arrived ten minutes later, running through the terminal in mismatched shoes. She stopped several feet away, afraid that rushing toward him might make him retreat.

Ethan crossed the distance himself.

“I’m sorry,” he said into her sweater.

Laura held him but did not say it was all right.

“You never have to save us alone,” she whispered. “Not again.”

The court treated Ethan’s disappearance as evidence of emotional pressure, but not in the way Vivian’s attorneys hoped. Judge Mercer ordered a child psychologist independent of every party and scheduled an expedited custody hearing.

Ethan’s letter was admitted under seal.

Then the prosecutor delivered new evidence.

The airline had preserved gate-camera footage from the morning of Flight 218. It showed Vivian kneeling beside Ethan before they entered security.

The video had no audio, but a directional microphone at the gate had captured her words.

“Smile,” Vivian told him. “If anyone asks, your mother gave you to me.”

Ethan answered, “But she didn’t.”

May you like

Vivian leaned close.

“She will after we leave.”
