Gate Forty-Six

Chapter 04 - Gate Forty-Six

The discovery of the false court document changed the room.

Airport police confiscated Martin Vale’s folder. Dana Brooks placed Ethan under emergency protective supervision. Vivian demanded to speak to the airport director, the police chief, and anyone else whose title she thought could bend the facts back into place.

Robert requested that Flight 218 remain grounded.

This time, the airline agreed.

At Gate 46, passengers groaned as the delay announcement appeared. No one knew that the child whose name had been entered on the manifest was sitting two terminals away, asking whether his mother was in handcuffs.

“She should not be,” Robert told him.

It was the most honest answer he could give.

Laura Bennett was brought upstairs twenty minutes later. She wore jeans, a rain-soaked green sweater, and no coat. A red mark circled one wrist where the plastic restraint had been cut away.

Ethan ran to her before anyone could stop him.

Laura dropped to her knees and caught him against her chest. For several seconds, she could not speak. She pressed her face into his hair and breathed as if she had been underwater for years.

Vivian watched through the glass wall of the interview room.

Her expression was not hatred. It was something more complicated and, in its own way, more dangerous: certainty.

Laura looked at Robert over Ethan’s shoulder. “Daniel said you would understand.”

“I wish he’d told me sooner.”

“He tried.” She glanced toward Vivian. “His mother controlled the medical updates after the accident. By the time I found the envelope, the guardianship had already been approved.”

Dana asked why Laura had waited two years to challenge it.

Laura’s arms tightened around Ethan.

“Because the first year after Daniel died, I was not well. I was drinking. I took sleeping pills. I checked myself into treatment because I was afraid my son would wake up and find me dead.”

Vivian’s lawyer had used that admission to obtain emergency guardianship.

“When I got sober, I petitioned to bring Ethan home,” Laura continued. “Every hearing was delayed. Every therapist Vivian hired said he needed stability. Every time Ethan told them he wanted me, they called it manipulation.”

Ethan pulled back. “Grandma told me you didn’t come because you wanted a new life.”

Laura’s face broke, but her voice stayed steady. “I came every time they let me.”

Dana received a message from her office and stepped aside.

When she returned, the sympathy in her eyes had been replaced by caution.

“There is a problem,” she said. “The guardianship order in the county system is valid. The false document was only the revocation. Until a judge changes the original order, Mrs. Hawthorne may still be Ethan’s legal guardian.”

Vivian heard her through the glass.

For the first time since the envelope was opened, she smiled.
