The Doctor from Cedar Ridge

Chapter 15 - The Doctor from Cedar Ridge

The custody hearing opened on a rainy Monday.

Vivian entered through the front doors of the courthouse while cameras shouted questions. Laura used a side entrance with Ethan and Dana. Robert sat behind them, no longer in uniform because his administrative review was still pending.

Vivian’s attorneys began with Laura’s addiction.

They described the night she entered Cedar Ridge Treatment Center, the sleeping pills found in her bathroom, and the message she left Jessica saying Ethan deserved a better mother. The facts were accurate. The meaning was not.

Then Dr. Naomi Shaw took the stand.

She had treated Laura at Cedar Ridge.

“Did Mrs. Bennett pose a danger to her son?” Vivian’s attorney asked.

“She posed a danger to herself if she remained untreated,” Dr. Shaw replied. “That is why she voluntarily sought care.”

“Did she express thoughts that Ethan would be better without her?”

“Yes. Such thoughts are common in severe grief and depression.”

“So Mrs. Hawthorne was justified in seeking guardianship.”

“Temporary guardianship, perhaps. Permanent separation, no.”

Dr. Shaw produced Laura’s discharge plan. It recommended supervised reunification beginning within ninety days, followed by expanded parenting time if she remained sober.

The court file contained a different version.

In that version, the reunification recommendation had been removed.

Thomas Reed had forwarded the altered report to Martin Vale. Melissa Crane had cited it in every later visitation summary.

Dr. Shaw also testified that Vivian visited Cedar Ridge once.

“She asked whether grief could make Laura permanently unfit,” Dr. Shaw said. “I told her recovery was likely with support. Mrs. Hawthorne replied, ‘Recovery would complicate everything.’”

Vivian’s face did not change, but her hand closed around a pen until her knuckles whitened.

Jessica testified next. She admitted giving Vivian access to Laura’s records. She admitted believing Laura’s illness made her dangerous. Then she turned toward her sister.

“I confused fear with judgment,” Jessica said. “Laura asked me for help, and I helped someone take her child instead.”

Laura cried silently.

The final witness that day was Ethan’s independent psychologist.

She testified that Ethan loved both women, feared disappointing both, and had begun to believe that affection was a form of betrayal.

“He does not need to choose whom to love,” she said. “He needs the adults to stop making love conditional.”

The judge called a recess.

As everyone stood, Vivian whispered to Laura, “You think winning him back will heal you. It won’t.”

Laura looked at her for a long moment.

“I’m not asking Ethan to heal me,” she said. “That is the difference between us.”
