The Name Written by a Dead Man

Chapter 02 - The Name Written by a Dead Man
Vivian’s heels struck the polished floor with the force of a countdown.
“Ethan, come away from that desk,” she called. Her tone was controlled, almost gentle, but the muscles around her mouth had gone rigid. “You know we are boarding.”
Robert slid the envelope behind the counter before she reached them.
Vivian stopped six feet away. She was sixty-four, elegant, wealthy, and accustomed to rooms changing shape around her. The men beside her were not relatives. One wore the badge of a private security company. The other was Martin Vale, a family-law attorney whose face appeared on highway billboards across the city.
Vale showed Robert a folder. “Mrs. Hawthorne has lawful guardianship. The child is traveling with his court-appointed custodian.”
Ethan’s fingers curled around the edge of the counter.
Robert did not touch the folder. “A child arrived at a federal security station claiming he is being removed against his mother’s wishes. That requires verification.”
“It requires nothing of the kind,” Vale said. “His mother lost custodial rights two years ago.”
Robert looked at Ethan. “Did you want to go to London?”
“No.”
Vivian’s face flickered. “He is frightened because his mother has been filling his head with fantasies. Laura is unstable. Daniel knew it. The court knows it.”
At the sound of his friend’s name, Robert opened the envelope.
The first page was a notarized letter dated eleven days before Daniel’s death. The second was a copy of a trust amendment. The third was a temporary custody revocation bearing a judge’s signature and a filing stamp Robert did not recognize.
Then he found the photograph.
It showed Daniel and Robert outside a military hospital twelve years earlier. Daniel’s arm was in a sling. Robert was sitting in a wheelchair, thinner than Ethan had ever seen him. On the back, Daniel had written: You promised me that if I couldn’t protect my family, you would.
Robert unfolded the handwritten letter.
Rob,
If you are reading this, my mother has done exactly what she threatened to do. She will use Laura’s illness, my money, and Ethan’s fear to take him. She will tell herself it is love. Do not believe her.
Robert stopped breathing for half a second.
Below Daniel’s signature was a warning: The guardianship petition contains a forged statement from Laura. The original medical release and recording are in Locker 317 at the airport rail station. The key is taped beneath Ethan’s passport sleeve.
Robert looked at Ethan. “Do you have your passport?”
Vivian stepped forward. “That is enough.”
The private guard reached for Ethan’s shoulder.
Robert moved between them.
“No one touches the child.”
Vale’s polished confidence cracked. “Officer Hayes, you are interfering with a valid court order.”
“Maybe,” Robert said. “Or maybe I’m stopping an international abduction.”

He pressed the emergency call button beneath the counter.
Across the terminal, the doors to the security office opened.
