The Bedroom I Never Changed

Chapter 17 - The Bedroom I Never Changed
Caroline moved back into the blue house temporarily.
She claimed it was only until she found an apartment.
Lucy knew better.
So did I.
One Saturday, we cleaned Caroline's old bedroom.
She opened the closet.
Her prom dress was still hanging there.
She laughed so hard she had to sit down.
"I can't believe Mom kept this."
"You looked terrible."
"You told me I looked beautiful."
"I lied."
"See? You've always been dishonest."
We laughed until Lucy came running upstairs to find out what was happening.
That was when I realized healing didn't always arrive dramatically.
Sometimes it sounded like sisters laughing in a dusty bedroom.
Sometimes it looked like a child drawing three stick figures under the words MY FAMILY.
The court granted Caroline full custody of Lucy.
Richard's parental rights became the subject of a separate proceeding, but he withdrew his claims through counsel.
He never wrote Lucy.
Never called.
For months, I worried that would hurt her.
Then one night she asked me, "Is it bad that I don't miss him?"
"No."
"Mom says I don't have to love someone just because we're related."
"Your mom is right."
Lucy smiled.
"Do I have to love you?"
I pretended to think.
"Absolutely. It's legally required."
She laughed.
Then she hugged me.
For years, I believed family was something blood guaranteed.
Lucy taught me otherwise.
Family was the person who stayed when staying became inconvenient.
The person who listened before judging.
May you like
The person who opened the door.
And sometimes, family was a frightened little girl sitting on a marble floor, carrying the truth everyone else had ignored.
