My Sister Behind Glass

Chapter 10 - My Sister Behind Glass

Caroline looked smaller than I remembered.

When she entered the visitation room, she stopped.

So did I.

Nine years disappeared.

Then came crashing back.

She picked up the phone on her side of the glass.

I picked up mine.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, she smiled.

"You still wear your hair the same way."

I started crying.

Not politely.

Not quietly.

I pressed one hand against the glass.

"I'm sorry."

Caroline closed her eyes.

That was all it took.

Nine years of anger broke.

"I thought you hated me," she whispered.

"I thought you stole from Mom."

"I thought you helped Richard."

"I didn't."

"I know."

I looked at her.

"How?"

"Lucy."

Her face changed immediately.

"Is she safe?"

"She's with me."

Caroline covered her mouth.

For the first time, she cried.

I told her about the gala.

The photograph.

The note.

The flash drive.

When I mentioned Richard's custody petition, fear replaced relief.

"Evelyn, you cannot let him have her."

"I won't."

"You don't understand."

"Then tell me."

Caroline looked toward the guard.

Then back at me.

"Richard doesn't want Lucy because he loves her."

"Why?"

"Because Mom changed her will after Lucy was born."

I stared at her.

Caroline continued.

"Lucy is a direct heir."

My mother had discovered Richard's manipulation shortly before her death.

She created a protected trust.

If either daughter had a child, that child would inherit the assets Richard had been trying to control.

Richard couldn't access the trust.

But a legal parent or guardian could manage it until Lucy turned eighteen.

Suddenly, his custody petition made sense.

Millions of dollars were involved.

But Caroline wasn't finished.

"There's one more thing."

"What?"

She leaned closer to the glass.

"Richard didn't meet you by accident."

I felt my stomach turn.

May you like

"He started dating you because I left him."

Everything I believed about the beginning of my marriage changed in one sentence.
