The Woman Everyone Called Unstable

Chapter 12 - The Woman Everyone Called Unstable
By morning, anonymous stories appeared online.
I drank too much.
I was obsessed with work.
I had emotional breakdowns.
I had supposedly threatened Richard.
None of it was true.
That didn't matter.
Richard understood something every prosecutor learns eventually.
A lie doesn't need to survive forever.
It only needs to survive long enough.
My friends stopped calling.
Board members requested distance.
A judge I had known for fifteen years suggested I "take time to recover."
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I packed Lucy's lunch.
That small routine saved me.
Peanut butter.
Apple slices.
A note inside her lunchbox.
You are safe.
Three words.
The kind of words Caroline and I had both needed years earlier.
That afternoon, Richard came to the house.
I refused to let him inside.
He stood on the porch in the rain.
"You're throwing away your career."
"No."
"Your marriage."
"That was gone before I knew it."
"Evelyn, think carefully."
"I finally am."
His eyes hardened.
"Give me temporary custody of Lucy."
I almost laughed.
"Never."
"The charges against Caroline could disappear."
There it was.
Not a confession.
Not quite.
But close enough.
"Are you threatening my sister?"
"I'm offering your family a solution."
"Leave."
He stepped closer.
"You know what your problem is?"
I waited.
"You always needed to be the smartest person in the room."
I looked at the man I had married.
"No, Richard."
My voice was calm.
"My problem was believing you were."
I closed the door.
That night, Lucy crawled into my bed after a nightmare.
She didn't say what she had dreamed.
She simply asked, "Can families start over?"
I looked at her.
"Sometimes."
"Can ours?"
I thought about Caroline behind glass.
About myself standing alone in a ballroom.
About the photograph that had brought us back together.
"Yes," I whispered.
May you like
But before that could happen, we had to survive the custody hearing.
And Richard had just convinced the court that I might be unfit.
