The Last Offer

Chapter 15 - The Last Offer
Richard didn't go far.
Men like him rarely believe they should have to run.
He stayed in a luxury hotel twenty minutes from our house.
Then he called me.
"I want to talk."
"No."
"One conversation."
"Through attorneys."
"I have something Caroline wants."
I almost hung up.
Then he said, "Your mother's original trust."
We met in the hotel lobby.
Public place.
Security cameras.
My lawyer nearby.
Richard looked tired.
For the first time in eleven years, he looked his age.
He placed a document folder on the table.
"Divorce me quietly."
I stared at him.
"That's your offer?"
"You keep your career."
"Already lost it."
"You'll get it back."
"Maybe."
"I withdraw the custody petition."
"You'll lose anyway."
His jaw tightened.
"And Caroline gets her inheritance."
"Which you stole."
He leaned forward.
"Everything doesn't have to become public."
There it was.
The thing Richard feared most.
Not prison.
Not divorce.
Exposure.
He had built his life around appearing respectable.
I pushed the folder back toward him.
"No."
"Evelyn."
"You took my sister from me for nine years."
"She left."
"You gave her reasons to."
"She was weak."
I stood.
"No. She survived you."
His face changed.
"And so did I."
I walked away.
Behind me, Richard called my name.
I didn't turn around.
For eleven years, he had controlled me by making me afraid of losing my reputation.
Now I understood something.
A reputation is only useful if keeping it doesn't cost you your soul.
The next morning, Richard Mercer was arrested.
Not because of anything I did.
I had recused myself completely.
May you like
He was arrested because the people he had used for years finally realized he could no longer protect them.
And one by one, they started talking.
