The Man Who Chose the Wrong Sister

Chapter 11 - The Man Who Chose the Wrong Sister
Caroline told me the story I should have heard sixteen years earlier.
She met Richard at a fundraiser.
He was charming.
Ambitious.
Patient.
For six months, she believed he loved her.
Then she became pregnant.
Richard's reaction wasn't joy.
It was calculation.
He asked questions about our mother's company.
The estate.
The family trust.
When Caroline refused to discuss money, he became distant.
Then he met me at a courthouse reception.
I remembered that night.
I had thought fate put us at the same table.
It wasn't fate.
Richard had asked to be seated there.
When Caroline realized he was pursuing me, she tried to warn me.
Then the foundation money disappeared.
Records pointed to her.
Our mother panicked.
I stopped answering Caroline's calls.
And Richard became the person comforting me through the crisis he had created.
The cruelty of it was almost elegant.
He never needed to force me away from my sister.
He simply gave me enough reasons to walk away myself.
Caroline lowered her head.
"I should've fought harder."
"So should I."
"You had no reason to believe me."
"You were my sister. That should have been enough reason to listen."
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Then Caroline smiled through tears.
"You sound like Mom."
"That's not a compliment."
She laughed.
It was the first time I had heard my sister laugh in nine years.
Before I left, she pressed her palm against the glass.
I pressed mine to the other side.
"Bring Lucy next time."
"I will."
Outside, my attorney was waiting.
His face told me something had happened.
"What?"
He handed me his phone.
Richard had given a television interview.
He sat beside our fireplace.
In our home.
Wearing the expression of a grieving husband.
"My wife is under enormous emotional strain," he told the reporter.
"She has become attached to a child who may be manipulating her."
Then he looked directly into the camera.
"I fear for Evelyn's mental health."
I watched the clip twice.
Richard wasn't defending himself anymore.

He was preparing to destroy my credibility.
Just as he had destroyed Caroline's.
