The Custody Hearing

Chapter 13 - The Custody Hearing

Richard arrived looking like a father.

That was the first thing I noticed.

No expensive three-piece suit.

No driver.

No press.

Just a navy jacket and an expression carefully designed to look concerned.

He was good.

I had forgotten how good.

His attorney described him as a biological father denied the opportunity to know his daughter.

Then he described me as an emotionally compromised aunt caught in a marital crisis.

Technically, none of those words were lies.

That made them dangerous.

My lawyer presented Caroline's situation.

The judge frowned.

"Ms. Harper is currently facing felony charges."

Richard lowered his head as if saddened by that fact.

I wanted to cross the courtroom and slap the sympathy off his face.

Instead, I waited.

Then Lucy's court-appointed advocate stood.

She had interviewed Lucy privately.

"Your Honor," she said, "the child has expressed a consistent and intense fear of Mr. Mercer."

Richard's attorney objected.

The judge overruled him.

The advocate continued.

"Lucy also states that her mother repeatedly instructed her to seek Evelyn Mercer specifically if anything happened."

The judge looked at Richard.

"Mr. Mercer, when did you first learn you had a daughter?"

"Recently."

A lie.

The advocate opened a folder.

"Then perhaps you can explain the birthday cards."

Richard froze.

Caroline had saved them.

Eight cards.

One for every year of Lucy's life.

Unsigned.

Never delivered.

Each contained money.

Each had been purchased using Richard's personal credit card.

He had known.

Every year.

He knew his daughter existed and chose silence.

Until her inheritance became accessible.

Richard didn't get custody that day.

Neither did I permanently.

But Lucy stayed with me.

Outside the courthouse, she threw her arms around my waist.

For the first time, she called me Aunt Evelyn.

Richard heard her.

The look on his face told me the fight had just become personal.
