The Upstate Trap

Chapter 08 - The Upstate Trap

The storm set in heavy over the Hudson Valley. Sheets of icy rain slammed against the windshield of the black SUV as Henderson drove at breakneck speeds along the winding, muddy mountain roads leading to the Valle family’s ancestral upstate estate.

“Miss Charlotte, this is a trap,” Henderson warned, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly as the tires splashed through deep puddles. “Margaret has lost everything. Her husband is in federal custody, her son is facing thirty years in prison, and her assets are frozen. A desperate animal is the most dangerous kind.”

“She has my grandfather, Henderson,” Charlotte said firmly from the passenger seat, checking the safety on a small GPS tracker she had hidden inside her shoe. “He protected my father, and he risked everything to claim me last night. I will not let her hurt him.”

“We aren't going in blind,” Henderson said, tapping a button on his earpiece. “I’ve alerted a specialized private security team. They are surrounding the estate’s perimeter right now, but we must get inside before they breach, or Margaret might pull the trigger.”

Ten minutes later, the iron gates of the isolated estate came into view, looming like giant black spears through the dense fog. The massive stone mansion sat atop a lonely hill, surrounded by towering pine trees.

Henderson killed the headlights, rolling the vehicle to a silent stop near the edge of the tree line.

“Stay behind me,” Henderson whispered, pulling a silenced sidearm from his shoulder holster.

They snuck through the side service entrance, slipping into the dark, cold hallways of the mansion. The air inside smelled of dust, old wood, and wet wool.

Following a faint yellow light echoing from the end of the main corridor, Charlotte and Henderson made their way down the grand stone steps into the estate’s underground medical vault—a reinforced panic room where Sebastian kept his private medical equipment.

Inside the vaulted room, Sebastian was tied securely to a heavy wooden chair in the center of the concrete floor. His silver cane lay snapped in two beside him. His face was bruised, but his eyes were sharp, fiery, and full of defiance.

Standing over him was Margaret. Her elegant silk dress from the night before was rumpled and stained with rain. Her hair was wild, her eyes bloodshot and crazed. In her right hand, she held a heavy, silver-plated revolver pointed directly at Sebastian’s temple.

Standing beside her were two burly, armed mercenaries wearing dark tactical jackets.

“Stop right there, orphan!” Margaret shrieked the moment Charlotte stepped into the light of the doorway.

“Grandfather!” Charlotte called out, taking a step forward, but Henderson caught her arm, keeping her shielded.

“Don't come any closer, Charlotte!” Sebastian shouted, his voice rough. “It’s a trap! Get out of here!”

“Shut up, old man!” Margaret screamed, jamming the barrel of the gun harder against Sebastian’s head. She turned her crazed glare toward Charlotte, a wicked, triumphant grin twisting her lips.

“Look at you,” Margaret sneered. “Dressed in fancy clothes, playing the big corporate CEO. You think because you have Arthur’s blood you can just walk in and steal forty years of my hard work? I built this empire while your father was playing savior!”

“You didn't build anything, Margaret,” Charlotte said, forcing her voice to remain cold, steady, and devoid of fear. “You stole. You embezzled. And when my father found out, you murdered him.”

“And I’d do it again!” Margaret laughed hysterically. “I should have hunted you down when you were a baby in that basket! But I’ll fix that mistake tonight!”

Margaret shifted the barrel of her revolver away from Sebastian’s head, aiming it straight at Charlotte’s heart.

“Say goodbye to your precious granddaughter, Sebastian!” Margaret yelled, her finger tightening on the trigger.
