The Counterstrike

Chapter 05 - The Counterstrike
The entire boardroom froze. The quiet murmurs among the board members stopped instantly, replaced by a deafening, shock-filled silence.
Julian’s smug expression stiffened. His hands, resting on his stack of legal papers, began to tremble slightly.
“What... what absurd nonsense are you talking about?” Julian stammered, trying to force a laugh, though his voice cracked under the sudden pressure. “She’s lying! She’s throwing out random baseless accusations to distract us from her lack of proof!”
“Is it baseless, Julian?” Charlotte asked coolly. She leaned back in her high-backed chair and gestured toward the large digital projection screen hanging on the main wall of the boardroom. “Mr. Vance, if you would please plug in the drive.”
Edward Vance immediately picked up the encrypted flash drive, stepped over to the master console, and plugged it into the system.
Within seconds, the projection screen lit up, displaying detailed bank ledgers, wire transfer receipts, shell company registration files, and encrypted email threads going back eighteen months.
At the bottom of every fraudulent transfer document was an electronic authorization stamp bearing Julian Valle’s private corporate key and Richard Valle’s digital signature.
Gasps erupted around the table. Senior board members leaned forward, their eyes wide with shock as they read the numbers flickering across the screen.
“Eight hundred million dollars...” one elderly director gasped, looking at Richard with absolute disgust. “You were draining the core reserves while telling us the European branch was suffering from market inflation!”
“This is a forgery!” Richard screamed, jumping to his feet so violently his chair crashed backward onto the carpet. “This girl hacked our servers or fabricated these documents! It’s fake!”
“It’s not fake, Richard,” Charlotte said calmly. “Those ledgers are pulled directly from the Swiss Federal Banking Registry. The raw data was verified by an independent forensic audit firm two hours ago.”
Julian glared at Charlotte with a mixture of terror and unbridled fury. “Where did you get these files?! You’re a university student! You don't have access to Swiss banking servers!”
Charlotte smiled—a sharp, intelligent smile that mirrored her grandfather’s legendary look.
“When you spend eighteen years surviving on the streets,” Charlotte said softly, “you learn that the most dangerous weapon isn't money. It’s information. My father left behind a hidden digital archive in an encrypted cloud server. He created it eighteen years ago to protect his research. All it needed was my biometrics to unlock.”
Sebastian looked at his granddaughter, a proud, booming laugh bursting from his chest. He slammed his silver cane down onto the floor with a loud THUD.
“Gentlemen of the board!” Sebastian announced, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “You have seen the evidence! Julian and Richard Valle have committed grand larceny, corporate treason, and embezzlement against this firm!”
Sebastian turned his icy glare toward the two terrified men standing at the end of the table.
“By my authority as Chairman and majority shareholder,” Sebastian declared, “I hereby strip Richard and Julian Valle of all executive titles, revoke their stock options, and turn this evidence directly over to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the FBI!”
Two uniformed federal agents, who had been waiting outside in the hallway with Edward Vance, stepped smoothly into the boardroom.
“Richard Valle, Julian Valle,” the lead agent said, pulling out two pairs of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and tax evasion. Please put your hands behind your backs.”
As the federal agents snapped the handcuffs around Julian’s wrists, Julian thrashed wildly, screaming at Charlotte across the table.
“You think you’ve won, you little street rat?!” Julian shrieked, his face red with manic rage. “You have no idea what you’ve walked into! My mother isn't going to let you take this family! You’ll be dead before the week is over!”
“Take them away,” Sebastian ordered flatly.
As the disgraced executives were led out of the boardroom in front of the entire board, the remaining directors stood up one by one, turning toward Charlotte and clapping their hands in unanimous respect.

Charlotte had saved the company from destruction in less than thirty minutes.
But as she looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling city below, she knew Julian’s threat wasn't an empty one. Margaret was still out there, and the dark secret behind her father’s death eighteen years ago was far from fully solved.
