The Shadow in the Archives

Chapter 06 - The Shadow in the Archives
The immediate aftermath of the boardroom raid sent shockwaves through the global financial markets. News of Richard and Julian Valle’s arrests dominated every major news network, while headlines praised Charlotte Valle as the brilliant prodigal heiress who had saved her family’s empire from inner corruption.
By late afternoon, the quiet of the penthouse returned. But Charlotte knew she couldn't afford to rest.
She sat in Sebastian’s private study on the 50th floor, surrounded by rows of leather-bound books and historical family archives. On the mahogany desk lay her father’s old leather notebook—the one that had fallen out of her broken bag on the lobby floor the night before.
She carefully flipped through the yellowed pages. Her father, Arthur, had been an obsessive writer. Every page was filled with intricate mathematical formulas, corporate strategy notes, and personal journal entries written in neat black ink.
As Charlotte reached the very last page of the notebook, her eyes caught something unusual. The back cover was unusually thick.
Using a small silver letter opener from the desk, Charlotte carefully sliced along the inner seam of the leather binding.
Inside a tiny hidden compartment slipped out a small, faded photograph and a folded piece of paper.
Charlotte picked up the photograph. It showed her father, Arthur, standing on a dock next to a beautiful woman holding a newborn baby—Charlotte herself. But standing right behind them, partially obscured by the shadow of the boat’s cabin, was a third person whose face made Charlotte’s breath hitch in her throat.
It wasn't Margaret. It wasn't Richard.
It was Mr. Henderson—the general manager of the St. Regis Hotel, the very man who had picked up her golden invitation off the marble floor last night.
Charlotte’s heart began to hammer against her ribs. She unfolded the piece of paper that was tucked behind the photo. It was a hand-drawn map of an old estate property located in the dense forests of upstate New York, marked with a red wax seal at the bottom bearing the letters: PROJECT LAZARUS.
Written in Arthur’s handwriting right below the map were six words that chilled Charlotte to her core:
If I disappear, trust only Henderson.
Charlotte stood up abruptly, pulling out her phone. Was Henderson the anonymous person who had sent the DNA results and the golden invitation to her apartment? Was he a loyal ally protecting her from the shadows, or was he part of the conspiracy that had destroyed her parents?
Before she could call her grandfather, the study door opened silently.
Mr. Henderson himself walked into the room, carrying a silver tray with a fresh pot of coffee. He wore his usual immaculate tuxedo, his expression serene and professional.
“Good evening, Miss Charlotte,” Henderson said smoothly, setting the tray down on the coffee table. “Your grandfather is currently in a teleconference with the international shareholders. He asked me to ensure you had everything you needed.”
Charlotte kept her right hand hidden behind her back, clutching the faded photograph tight in her fingers. She looked straight into Henderson’s eyes.
“Mr. Henderson,” Charlotte said softly, her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. “How long have you worked for the Valle family?”
Henderson paused, his gloved hands lingering on the handle of the silver coffee pot. He slowly looked up at her, a soft, melancholy glint appearing in his old eyes.
“Thirty-five years, Miss Charlotte,” Henderson replied quietly.

Charlotte stepped forward and placed the faded photograph onto the desk right in front of him, pointing directly at his younger face standing behind her father on the dock.
“Then maybe you can explain why you were standing on my father’s yacht three hours before it exploded eighteen years ago,” Charlotte demanded.
