The Bloodline Revealed

Chapter 02 - The Bloodline Revealed

A collective, gasping shock rippled through the grand lobby. Guests dropped their champagne flutes; phones froze mid-recording, and Margaret stood paralyzed, her mouth hanging open as if she had swallowed glass.

“S-Sebastian?” Margaret stammered, her face turning as white as the marble beneath her feet. “What are you saying? Granddaughter?! That’s impossible! Your son Arthur died eighteen years ago in that boat accident! He didn't have any children!”

Sebastian didn't even turn around to look at Margaret. He kept one broad arm firmly wrapped around Charlotte’s shoulders, shielding her from the room full of vultures, while Mr. Henderson quickly gathered Charlotte’s scattered belongings from the floor, handling the worn notebook as if it were made of pure gold.

“Arthur didn't die alone, Margaret,” Sebastian said, his voice cold and cutting like a diamond blade. “And he didn't die without leaving an heir. For eighteen years, certain people in this family made sure I believed my son left nothing behind. But blood always finds its way back home.”

Charlotte looked up at the legendary billionaire holding her. For her entire life, she had grown up in state care, moving from one strict foster home to another, told by social workers that her parents were unknown strangers who had perished in a storm. She had survived on scholarships, meal programs, and hard labor.

Three days ago, a sealed wax envelope had arrived at her tiny basement apartment. Inside was the golden invitation and a handwritten letter from an anonymous sender that read: Go to the St. Regis on Friday. Demand your seat at the head table.

“Grandfather...?” Charlotte whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

Sebastian looked down at her, his hands gently framing her face. He saw the red, swollen mark on her left cheek where Margaret’s palm had struck her moments ago. The old man’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles in his neck strained.

“Look at her face, Margaret,” Sebastian turned slowly, his eyes flashing with a terrifying, ancient rage. “You just struck the sole legitimate heir to the Valle estate in front of fifty witnesses.”

Margaret took two frantic steps backward, clutching her pearl necklace. “Sebastian, please! I didn't know! She was dressed like a beggar! She was causing a scene! I was just trying to protect the family’s reputation!”

“You were protecting your own greed!” Sebastian barked, the sound echoing like thunder off the high walls. “You and your husband have spent the last decade draining the company’s charitable foundation because you thought there was no direct bloodline to challenge your proxy votes!”

Two tall, muscular men in dark suits stepped out of the private elevator behind Sebastian.

“Mr. Henderson,” Sebastian ordered the manager. “Cancel the gala. Clear the lobby immediately. Security, escort my niece Margaret out of this building. She is stripped of her executive board access effective this second.”

“You can’t do this!” Margaret shrieked as the guards grabbed her arms, pinning her back. “I’m a senior partner! My husband controls thirty percent of the board’s voting shares! You can’t just replace us with a street orphan!”

“Watch me,” Sebastian replied with lethal calm.

As Margaret was forcefully dragged out through the side exit, screaming curses that echoed into the night, Sebastian turned back to Charlotte. He picked up her raw, bruised hand and patted it gently.

“You’ve suffered enough in the dark, Charlotte,” Sebastian said softly. “It’s time you take your place at the top.”

He led her toward the executive elevator, but as the heavy brass doors were about to close, Charlotte caught sight of a shadowy figure standing in the far corner of the mezzanine balcony above.

A man in a dark velvet suit was holding a crystal glass, staring down at her with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred. It was Julian Valle—Margaret’s son, and the man who was supposed to be named CEO of Valle International at tonight’s gala.

Julian raised his glass to Charlotte in a silent, ominous toast before disappearing into the shadows.
