The Boardroom Siege

Chapter 04 - The Boardroom Siege

The sun rose over the city in a blaze of cold orange and grey. By 8:30 AM, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Valle International Headquarters was surrounded by news vans, reporters, and private security guards.

Stories of the dramatic incident at the St. Regis gala had leaked to the press overnight. The stock market was volatile; shares of Valle International were fluctuating wildly as rumors of a secret heiress spread like wildfire through Wall Street.

Inside the executive dressing room on the top floor of the tower, Charlotte stood before a full-length mirror.

She no longer looked like the girl who had been slapped onto the marble floor eighteen hours ago. She wore a tailored, dark navy silk suit with crisp white lapels, her long dark hair styled in elegant waves, and a subtle diamond pendant resting at her throat—a piece of jewelry that had belonged to her mother.

Sebastian stood behind her, leaning on his cane, looking at her reflection with immense pride.

“You look just like Arthur,” Sebastian whispered. “He never backed down from a fight either.”

“I’m nervous, Grandfather,” Charlotte admitted honestly, looking at her hands. “I know how to study for finals, I know how to work a double shift at a diner... but I don't know how to navigate a boardroom full of sharks who want me erased.”

“You don't need to know their corporate tricks, Charlotte,” Sebastian said sternly. “You hold the bloodline. And more importantly, you hold your father’s intellect. Trust your instincts.”

A sharp knock sounded at the door. Sebastian’s chief legal counsel, a veteran lawyer named Edward Vance, stepped inside holding a leather briefcase.

“It’s time, sir,” Edward said gravely. “Julian and Richard have assembled the entire board of directors in the main conference room. They’ve brought in three high-profile corporate attorneys and a team of media consultants. They’re planning to file an emergency motion to declare you mentally unfit to lead due to your age and health.”

Sebastian’s eyes flashed with cold anger. “Let them try.”

Five minutes later, the grand double doors of the 40th-floor boardroom swung open.

A massive oval conference table sat surrounded by twenty senior board members, major shareholders, and corporate lawyers. At the far end of the table sat Richard Valle—Margaret’s husband—and beside him sat Julian, looking smug and triumphant.

When Sebastian walked in with Charlotte at his side, a heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room.

“Ah, Sebastian!” Richard said, standing up and buttoning his expensive suit jacket, pretending to offer a polite smile. “We were worried about your health after last night’s scene. You really shouldn't be stressing yourself with... unverified claims.”

“Cut the fake concern, Richard,” Sebastian snapped, taking his seat at the head of the table. He gestured for Charlotte to sit in the high-backed leather chair right beside him.

Julian slammed a thick stack of legal documents onto the center of the table.

“Let’s get straight to the point, gentlemen!” Julian announced loudly, addressing the board. “My grandfather has been manipulated by an ambitious fraud! This girl, Charlotte, has no legally binding birth certificate linking her to Arthur Valle. Her adoption records are a mess of foster care transfers!”

Julian turned to look directly at Charlotte, a cruel, victorious smile spreading across his face.

“Under Section 4 of the corporate bylaws, any claim to family trust shares must be accompanied by an official, court-ordered, certified DNA match performed by a state-approved medical examiner,” Julian declared. “Which she doesn't have! Therefore, I motion to invalidate her presence, remove Sebastian’s temporary voting proxy, and proceed with my appointment as CEO!”

Several board members began nodding in agreement, murmuring quietly among themselves.

Julian looked at Charlotte as if he had just delivered the killing blow. “Anything to say for yourself, orphan?”

Charlotte didn't panic. She didn't flinch. Slowly, she leaned forward, resting her elbows on the polished mahogany table, locking her eyes directly onto Julian’s.

“Actually, Julian,” Charlotte said, her voice calm, clear, and ringing with absolute confidence. “I do have something to say.”

She reached into her jacket pocket, pulled out a sleek, encrypted flash drive, and tossed it onto the glass surface in front of the head lawyer.

“Before we discuss my DNA,” Charlotte said smoothly, “why don't we discuss the eight hundred million dollars you transferred out of the company’s European subsidiary into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands three weeks ago?”
