What My Father Asked For

Chapter 19 - What My Father Asked For
Adrian put the call on speaker.
Malcolm’s voice sounded older.
“I need to speak with Claire.”
Claire looked at Adrian.
“I’m here.”
A pause.
“I didn’t know.”
“Didn’t know what?”
“That he would answer.”
Claire almost smiled.
“Why are you calling?”
Malcolm took a breath.
“I’m leaving New York.”
She waited.
“I thought you should know.”
“Where are you going?”
“Connecticut.”
Of course.
A quiet house.
A private road.
Somewhere no one could watch him become less important.
“I hope you’re well,” Claire said.
Malcolm laughed softly.
“No, you don’t.”
Claire considered.
“You’re right.”
The honesty startled him.
“I don’t wish you harm,” she continued. “But I’m not responsible for making you feel forgiven.”
Silence.
Then Malcolm said, “I saw the paternity result.”
Claire looked at Adrian.
“How?”
“Elena’s attorney sent formal notice.”
“What do you want?”
“I want to speak to her.”
Claire’s heart hardened.
“That’s her decision.”
“Can you ask?”
“No.”
“Claire.”
“No.”
He sighed.
“I’m trying.”
She closed her eyes.
Maybe he was.
Maybe he was trying in the only way he knew.
Still centering himself.
Still asking her to carry the message.
“You can write her a letter,” Claire said.
“She may not read it.”
“That’s true.”
“Can you tell her I’m sorry?”
“No.”
His breathing changed.
“Why?”
“Because then I become responsible for whether she receives your apology correctly.”
Malcolm went quiet.
Claire continued.
“Write it yourself.”
“What do I say?”
She almost laughed.
Then she realized he genuinely did not know.
“The truth.”
“That I made mistakes?”
“No.”
“That I regret how things happened?”
“No.”
His frustration rose.
“Then what?”
Claire looked at Adrian.
He did not interrupt.
She thought of Catherine.
Rosa.
Rebecca.
Daniel.
Thomas.
All the people who had spent years translating Malcolm into gentler language.
She would not.
“Tell her what you did.”
Malcolm went silent.
Claire continued.
“No excuses. No reasons. No explanation of what you were protecting. Just what you did.”
He said nothing for so long she thought the call had dropped.
Then he whispered, “I don’t know if I can.”
Claire felt something in her soften.
Not forgiveness.
Pity, perhaps.
“You can.”
“How?”
“By accepting that the truth may not make you look like the man you wanted to be.”
Malcolm breathed in.
Then out.
“I loved you.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“I know.”
“I still do.”
“I know.”
It was enough.
For now.
They ended the call.
Adrian placed the phone on the table.
Claire stood by the window.
The city was bright below them.
Same skyline.
Different life.
Adrian came beside her.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
He waited.
Then Claire laughed quietly.
“What?”
She looked at him.
“I think that might be the first time I said yes and meant it.”
Adrian smiled.
A week later, Elena received a letter.
She did not open it.
Not immediately.
She placed it in a kitchen drawer.
Three months later, she read it.
She never told Claire every word.
May you like
Only one sentence.
“He finally wrote my name first.”
