The Daughter He Could Not Name

Chapter 14 - The Daughter He Could Not Name

After the meeting, Malcolm asked Elena to stay.

Claire expected her to refuse.

She did not.

The boardroom emptied slowly.

Claire remained.

So did Rebecca.

Malcolm looked at Claire.

“Alone.”

Elena spoke first.

“No.”

Malcolm turned to her.

“I was not talking to you.”

“That’s been the problem for thirty-four years.”

Claire almost smiled.

Malcolm looked exhausted.

Older.

For a moment, he was simply a man who had spent too long defending a version of himself.

Then he looked at Elena again.

“What do you want?”

She answered immediately.

“Nothing you can give me.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Money?”

“No.”

“A public statement?”

“No.”

“A share of the foundation?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Elena swallowed.

“I wanted to see whether you could say my name.”

Malcolm stared at her.

Claire felt her heart ache.

Elena continued.

“You knew I existed. You tracked where we lived. You knew where I went to school. You knew when I changed jobs.”

Malcolm looked toward Daniel.

Daniel did not move.

Elena stepped closer.

“You monitored my life because you were afraid I would become a problem.”

“That was not—”

“Say my name.”

Malcolm went silent.

Claire watched him.

She had never seen her father struggle with two words.

Finally, he said, “Elena.”

Her eyes filled.

She nodded once.

“That’s all.”

She turned toward the door.

Malcolm spoke.

“Wait.”

Elena stopped.

“I did not know how to handle it.”

Claire’s anger rose.

Elena turned back.

“You were forty-one.”

“I had a family.”

“So did my mother.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

“I know.”

Her voice was steady now.

“You mean you had the family that counted.”

Malcolm looked down.

Claire wondered whether shame had finally reached him.

Then he said the wrong thing.

“I could have handled this differently.”

Elena laughed.

It was quiet and devastating.

“You keep talking like the problem was strategy.”

Malcolm’s face closed.

There he was again.

The man who could regret consequences without fully regretting choices.

Claire suddenly understood her mother better than she ever had.

Catherine had not left because Malcolm was incapable of love.

She had left because his love always placed him at the center.

Even his remorse did.

Claire stepped beside Elena.

Malcolm looked at her.

“You’re choosing her over me?”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Relief flickered across his face.

Then Claire continued.

“I’m choosing myself.”

His expression collapsed.

She took Elena’s hand.

Rebecca followed them out.

In the hallway, Claire’s phone rang.

Adrian.

She answered.

His voice was tense.

“The ethics investigators are at my office.”

Claire stopped walking.

“What?”

“They have a warrant.”

Elena turned.

Claire’s pulse spiked.

“For what?”

“Fraud.”

“That’s impossible.”

“I know.”

“Did my father—”

“I don’t know.”

Adrian took a breath.

“Claire, there’s something else.”

“What?”

“They found transfers from a foundation account into one of my company’s subsidiaries.”

Claire went cold.

“How much?”

“Two point eight million dollars.”

She could not speak.

Adrian continued.

“I never authorized them.”

Claire looked through the glass doors.

At the end of the corridor, Malcolm stood inside the boardroom.

May you like

Watching her.

And for the first time, he smiled.
