The Woman in Red Knew Why My Husband Lied

Chapter 01 - The Woman in Red Knew Why My Husband Lied
## chapter 01 - The Woman at the Railing
Claire Harrington heard her husband’s name before she saw him.
“Adrian…?”
Her own voice came out smaller than she intended, nearly swallowed by the string quartet drifting through the open doors of the rooftop ballroom.
Adrian Cole stood beside the stone railing with a woman Claire had never seen before. The woman wore a deep-red satin gown, her dark hair loose over one shoulder, one hand gripping the edge of the balcony as though she had just steadied herself.
Adrian was standing far too close.
Close enough that Claire could see the woman’s breath catch when she looked up at him.
Close enough that the two of them seemed to exist in a private world, while the Manhattan skyline glittered behind them.
“What are you doing with her?” Claire asked.
Adrian turned.
The expression on his face was not guilt.
That almost made it worse.
It was fear.
Not fear of being caught.
Fear of something else.
“Elena,” he said quietly, without taking his eyes off Claire. “Don’t.”
The woman in red looked past him.
“You don’t know why he brought me here.”
Claire felt her stomach tighten.
Two men stood several yards away near the balcony doors. One was Adrian’s security consultant, Mason Reed. His white shirt was torn at the collar, and there was a dark stain near his shoulder. Another man kept a steadying hand on him while whispering into a phone.
Something had happened before Claire arrived.
Something serious.
But none of that explained why Adrian had told her that afternoon he would be meeting donors until she joined him at eight.
It did not explain why he had been secretly texting someone for weeks.
And it certainly did not explain the woman in red.
Claire stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
Elena’s lips parted, but Adrian answered first.
“Claire, we need to go somewhere private.”
“No.”
Guests had begun drifting toward the balcony.
Claire recognized the subtle turn of heads.
The Harrington Foundation gala was her father’s most important event of the year. Half the room belonged to people who treated scandal as entertainment.
She lowered her voice.
“You lied to me.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
It was the one answer she had not expected him to give so quickly.
Elena looked at Claire with something that was not triumph.
It was pity.
That made Claire furious.
“Ask him,” Elena said.
Adrian turned sharply toward her.
“Elena.”
“Ask him what happened before you arrived.”
Claire looked at her husband.
For two years, Adrian had been the calm place in her life. The man who never played games. The man who knew how deeply she hated secrets after growing up in a family that polished every ugly thing until it looked respectable.
Now he could not meet her eyes.
“Adrian,” she whispered, “what did you hide from me?”
He finally looked at her.
Then a familiar voice came from behind them.
“Quite a scene.”
Claire froze.
Her father, Malcolm Harrington, stood in the balcony doorway, smiling as if he had just walked into a mildly inconvenient dinner reservation.
His eyes moved from Adrian to Elena.
The smile disappeared.
For the first time in Claire’s life, she saw her father look genuinely afraid.
Elena straightened.
“You remember me now?”
Malcolm said nothing.
Claire looked from one face to another.
And suddenly she understood that whatever this was, it had started long before her marriage.
May you like
Long before tonight.
Maybe even before she was born.
