Elena’s Real Reason

Chapter 12 - Elena’s Real Reason
The night before the board meeting, Elena disappeared.
She left the hotel at six in the morning.
Her phone went straight to voicemail.
By eight, Claire was furious.
By nine, she was afraid.
At ten, Adrian called.
“She’s with Rosa.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Is Rosa all right?”
“She had trouble breathing overnight. The care home transferred her to a hospital.”
Claire was already reaching for her coat.
The hospital was in Boston.
They drove.
Together.
For three hours, Claire and Adrian sat side by side in silence.
At a rest stop in Connecticut, he bought her coffee exactly the way she liked it.
She took it.
Neither mentioned the fact.
At the hospital, Elena sat beside a small woman with silver-streaked dark hair and a face that seemed both familiar and completely unknown.
Rosa Marquez looked at Claire.
Tears filled her eyes.
“You have Catherine’s chin.”
Claire did not know what to say.
So she sat down.
Rosa reached for her hand.
Her grip was surprisingly strong.
“I am sorry.”
Claire swallowed.
“For what?”
“For letting you grow up without your mother’s truth.”
“You were trying to survive.”
Rosa looked at Elena.
“Yes.”
Then back at Claire.
“But survival can still hurt other people.”
Claire thought of Adrian.
Of Rebecca.
Of Daniel.
Everyone had a reason.
Reasons did not erase consequences.
Rosa asked Elena and Adrian to step outside.
Claire stayed.
For the next hour, Rosa told her the story without romance.
Malcolm had been charming.
Rosa had been twenty-six.
He had made her feel seen.
Then she became pregnant.
He changed.
Not overnight.
Gradually.
Promises became conditions.
Money became leverage.
Affection became silence.
When Rosa refused to end the pregnancy, he threatened to accuse her of stealing from the foundation.
Catherine found out.
Claire’s mother did the one thing Rosa never expected.
She helped her.
“Did my mother hate you?” Claire asked.
Rosa smiled sadly.
“At first.”
Claire almost laughed.
That answer felt human.
“Then?”
“She hated what he did more.”
Rosa looked toward the window.
“She told me we were both women he had convinced to compete for a version of him that did not exist.”
Claire felt tears rise.
“Why did you ask Elena to find me now?”
Rosa was quiet.
“Because I am tired.”
Claire’s chest tightened.
“And because Elena has spent her whole life believing she was unwanted.”
Claire looked through the glass wall at Elena in the hallway.
Rosa continued.
“She says she does not need Malcolm. That is true. But not needing him does not mean his rejection left no wound.”
Claire squeezed her hand.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Nothing for me.”
“Then why all of this?”
Rosa smiled.
“I wanted Elena to know she had family who might choose her.”
Claire looked at her.
Not money.
Not revenge.
Not the foundation.
Family.
That was Elena’s real reason.
Claire stood and walked into the hallway.
Elena looked up.
“How is she?”
Claire did not answer.
She crossed the space between them and hugged her.
Elena froze.
Then slowly held on.
It lasted only a few seconds.
But when they stepped apart, both were crying.
Adrian looked away to give them privacy.
Claire glanced at him.
For the first time since the rooftop, she understood what he had been trying to protect.
Not Malcolm.
Not himself.
A fragile possibility.
He had still been wrong to hide it.
But he had not been careless with her heart.
He had been afraid of breaking it.
Claire looked at Elena.
“Come to the board meeting tomorrow.”
Elena shook her head.
“I can’t leave her.”
Rosa’s voice came weakly from the room.
“Yes, you can.”
They turned.
Rosa smiled.
“I waited thirty-four years for Malcolm Harrington to be uncomfortable.”
Even Adrian laughed.
Then Rosa’s expression grew serious.
“Go.”
Elena wiped her face.
May you like
Claire reached for her hand.
And this time, Elena took it.
