The Boardroom

Chapter 13 - The Boardroom
The Harrington Foundation boardroom was designed to make people feel small.
Floor-to-ceiling windows.
A table carved from a single piece of walnut.
Portraits of Malcolm shaking hands with presidents, governors, and royalty.
Claire had grown up believing the room was proof of achievement.
Now it looked like a stage set.
Malcolm sat at the head of the table.
Rebecca sat at the opposite end.
Adrian did not attend.
That was Claire’s decision.
This was not his battle to fight for her.
Elena sat beside Claire.
Daniel stood near the door.
Malcolm’s eyes rested on Elena for one second too long.
Then he smiled.
“Shall we begin?”
The meeting opened with financial reports.
Public trust concerns.
Reputational risk.
Malcolm spoke calmly about recent “attacks.”
He never said Elena’s name.
Then he moved to remove Rebecca as executive director.
Claire raised her hand.
“I have a question first.”
Malcolm sighed.
“Claire.”
“It’s simple.”
She looked around the table.
“How many people here know who Rosa Marquez is?”
No one moved.
Rebecca raised her hand.
Daniel did too.
One elderly board member slowly followed.
Malcolm’s face tightened.
Claire continued.
“Rosa worked for this foundation thirty-four years ago. She discovered financial irregularities. She was also pregnant with my father’s child.”
Gasps.
A chair shifted.
Malcolm stood.
“This is inappropriate.”
Claire looked at him.
“Is it false?”
“This is a family matter.”
“You built your family name into the foundation.”
“That does not make my private life board business.”
“No. But using foundation staff and resources to intimidate someone does.”
Malcolm’s expression hardened.
“Do you have proof?”
Claire thought of Daniel’s warning.
Do not chase the secret he can deny.
She did not answer the question.
Instead, she asked another.
“Did you have an affair with Rosa Marquez?”
Malcolm looked around the room.
Every eye was on him.
He chose image.
“I had a brief relationship.”
Elena’s hand tightened under the table.
Claire continued.
“Did she become pregnant?”
“I was told she did.”
“Did you believe the child could be yours?”
Malcolm’s jaw flexed.
“It was possible.”
The room changed.
He felt it.
Claire did too.
For decades, he had survived by forcing other people to defend themselves.
Now he was answering.
“Did you support the child?”
“No.”
“Did you ask to meet her?”
“No.”
“Did you threaten Rosa?”
“No.”
Daniel spoke from the door.
“Yes.”
Malcolm turned.
Daniel walked forward.
“I was there.”
Malcolm laughed.
“Daniel, sit down.”
“I’m not your employee anymore.”
Silence.
Malcolm’s face lost color.
Daniel continued.
“You told Rosa you would accuse her of stealing if she embarrassed you.”
“That is a lie.”
Rebecca spoke.
“I heard you say it too.”
Malcolm looked at her.
“Of course you did.”
Claire watched his control slipping.
Not fully.
But enough.
“You all want to blame me,” Malcolm said, “because none of you understand what it takes to protect an institution like this.”
Claire leaned forward.
“From a baby?”
His hand struck the table.
“From chaos!”
The room froze.
Malcolm realized he had raised his voice.
Claire did not move.
“What chaos?”
He looked at Elena.
“She would have destroyed everything.”
Elena finally spoke.
“I was an infant.”
Malcolm’s face twisted.
“You became leverage.”
The words hung in the room.
Claire saw two board members exchange looks.
There it was.
Not a confession to every act.
Something worse.
A glimpse of how he saw people.
As leverage.
Assets.
Threats.
Claire looked at the chairman.
“I request an independent forensic audit and an external review of all historical personnel actions involving Rosa Marquez.”
Malcolm stood.
“You don’t have the authority.”
The chairman cleared his throat.
“Actually, she has the right to make the motion.”
Rebecca seconded it.
Then another member.
Then another.
Malcolm stared around the table.
His kingdom had not collapsed.
May you like
Not yet.
But for the first time, the room did not belong to him.
