The Recording

Chapter 08 - The Recording
The security footage was clear.
Emma entered Evelyn’s house carrying the red folder.
When she opened it, the corner of the missing ledger page was visible for twelve seconds.
Robert froze the image.
“There.”
Daniel leaned closer to the monitor.
Claire stood behind him.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Only half the sentence could be seen.
But half was enough.
…ownership transfers to Claire Bennett as emergency trustee…
Daniel closed his eyes.
Robert turned off the screen.
“Your father’s clause existed.”
Daniel whispered, “She knew.”
“Yes.”
“She knew all these years.”
Claire looked at him.
“She also knew I didn’t.”
Daniel stared at the dark monitor.
That was the cruelest part.
Emma had built her plan around Claire’s ignorance.
That afternoon, the company board convened an emergency meeting.
Daniel entered alone.
Claire refused to go with him.
“You should be there,” he told her.
“No.”
“They need to hear from you.”
“They need to hear from their CEO.”
Daniel understood.
This was his mess to face.
Three hours later, he called.
“They suspended Emma.”
Claire sat at her desk.
“Pending investigation?”
“Yes.”
“And you?”
A pause.
“I offered to step aside.”
Claire was surprised.
“Did they accept?”
“No. But they placed independent oversight on finance.”
“That’s appropriate.”
Daniel breathed out.
“You sound like an auditor.”
“I am an auditor.”
“I miss my wife.”
Claire closed her eyes.
She loved him.
That had not disappeared.
But love was not a bandage for public humiliation.
“Daniel.”
“I know.”
“No, I don’t think you do.”
He was silent.
Claire continued.
“You didn’t just believe a forged document.”
“I know.”
“You used it to punish me in front of people.”
His voice dropped.
“I know.”
“You wanted me ashamed before you wanted me heard.”
Daniel said nothing.
Claire felt tears rise.
She refused to let them take her voice.
“I need space.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know.”
That evening, Daniel moved into a hotel.
He did not argue.
The next morning, Claire received an envelope at her office.
No return address.
Inside was a photograph.
Daniel and Emma as children, standing beside their father.
On the back, someone had written:
Ask what happened the night Thomas died.
Claire stared at the message.
Then called Robert.
He answered immediately.
“Claire?”
“Was Thomas alone when he died?”
Silence.
“Robert.”
“No.”
Her heart began to pound.
“Who was with him?”
Another pause.
“Emma.”
Claire looked at the photograph again.
“What happened that night?”
Robert’s answer came slowly.
May you like
“That depends on whether you want the truth everyone accepted—
or the truth Thomas wrote down before he collapsed.”
