Claire’s Father Comes Back

Chapter 14 - Claire’s Father Comes Back
Claire had not seen her father in twelve years.
Leonard Morgan looked older.
Smaller.
But his eyes were the same.
Restless.
Always searching for advantage.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“That’s your father?”
“Yes.”
“You told me he was gone.”
“He was.”
Leonard had disappeared after losing the family home to gambling debts.
Claire’s mother died two years later.
Claire had built her adult life around one rule:
Never depend on a promise you cannot verify.
Now Leonard stood beside Emma on live television.
A reporter asked, “Mr. Morgan, what can you confirm?”
Leonard leaned toward the microphone.
“My daughter has always been obsessed with money.”
Claire almost laughed.
The cruelty was too familiar.
Leonard continued.
“She talked about marrying into wealth when she was young.”
Daniel turned off the television.
“That’s enough.”
Claire stared at the black screen.
“No.”
She turned it back on.
“I need to hear it.”
Leonard claimed Claire had studied the Bennett family before meeting Daniel.
Claimed she had targeted him.
Claimed she had asked Leonard to help research the company.
Every statement was a distortion built around one true thing.
Claire had researched Bennett Hospitality.
For a graduate school case study.
Years before she met Daniel.
Emma had found the old paper.
Leonard had been paid to turn it into motive.
Claire stood.
“Call Robert.”
Daniel asked, “Why?”
“Because my father never does anything for free.”
Bank records confirmed it by evening.
Emma had transferred $90,000 to Leonard three months earlier through a consulting company.
Not enough to hide forever.
Just enough to buy him.
Claire sat alone after everyone left.
Daniel remained near the door.
“You don’t have to stay.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because I don’t think you should be alone.”
Claire looked at him.
“I’ve been alone before.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
Daniel accepted that too.
Claire stared out the window.
“My father used to apologize every Sunday.”
Daniel stayed silent.
“He’d lose money all week. Lie. Borrow. Disappear. Then Sunday morning he’d make pancakes.”
Her voice tightened.
“He thought pancakes were accountability.”
Daniel sat across the room.
Claire looked at him.
“That’s why I’m afraid of forgiving you too quickly.”
Daniel nodded.
“Because you think I’ll become him.”
“No.”
Claire wiped her eyes.
“Because I’m afraid I’ll become my mother.”
He understood.
A woman who accepted every apology because she could not imagine another life.
Daniel said quietly, “Then don’t forgive me until it’s true.”
Claire looked at him.
“Even if it never is?”
His face broke slightly.
“Even then.”
The next morning, Leonard requested a private meeting with Claire.
She almost refused.
Then he sent one sentence.
Emma lied to me too.
Claire stared at the message.
She knew better than to trust him.
But she also knew something else.
May you like
Her father had survived his entire life by recognizing when a deal was collapsing.
And if Leonard Morgan was turning on Emma, then whatever he knew was worth hearing.
