The Account in Zurich

Chapter 11 - The Account in Zurich
The company’s forensic team found the international transfer request at 3:07 p.m.
Seven hundred eighty thousand dollars.
Final remaining liquid funds from Merritt Consulting.
Destination: Zurich.
Daniel called federal investigators.
Claire called Robert.
Evelyn called no one.
She arrived at Claire’s office wearing a blue coat and carrying a handbag large enough to contain a brick.
“I’m coming with you,” she said.
“To where?”
“The airport.”
“No.”
Evelyn raised an eyebrow.
Claire sighed.
“Fine.”
By the time they reached the terminal, Emma’s flight had been delayed.
Not because of them.
Weather.
Sometimes justice arrived as a thunderstorm.
Daniel found Emma near Gate 42.
She stood beside a carry-on suitcase.
No dramatic chase.
No screaming.
Just siblings facing each other under fluorescent lights while strangers ate pretzels nearby.
Emma looked at Evelyn.
“You brought Mom?”
Evelyn said, “I brought myself.”
Emma’s eyes moved to Claire.
“Of course.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“The transfer was stopped.”
Emma’s face did not change.
Claire admired that.
“Then why are you here?” Emma asked.
Daniel answered, “To give you one chance to come back and tell the truth.”
Emma laughed.
“You still think there’s a version of this where you get to be the good brother.”
Daniel flinched.
Claire watched him absorb it.
Then he said, “No.”
Emma stopped smiling.
Daniel continued.
“I think there’s a version where I stop being a coward.”
That landed.
Emma looked away.
Evelyn walked closer.
“I loved you.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
“Don’t.”
“I still do.”
“Don’t.”
“But loving you does not mean lying for you.”
Emma’s face broke.
For a moment Claire saw the girl beneath the armor.
Then Emma hardened again.
“You all chose her.”
Claire spoke.
“No.”
Emma looked at her.
“They chose the truth too late.”
Emma stared.
Claire continued.
“I didn’t steal your family.”
“You took my father.”
“No.”
“My brother.”
“No.”
“My company.”
“It was never yours to take.”
Emma’s hands trembled.
Around them, boarding announcements continued.
Life remained indifferent.
Then Emma whispered, “You don’t know what it’s like to spend your whole life being almost enough.”
Claire looked at her.
“No.”
A pause.
“But I know what it’s like to be punished for someone else’s wound.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
She looked at Daniel.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at the gate.
Finally she sat down.
Not defeated.
Exhausted.
“I’m not going anywhere,” she said.
Daniel nodded.
Minutes later, investigators approached.
Emma went with them voluntarily.
Before she left, she turned to Claire.
“You think this is over?”
Claire said nothing.
Emma smiled sadly.
“It isn’t.”
May you like
And she was right.
Because the next morning, the board discovered that Emma had not been working alone.
